Removal of cellular waste from the brain, spinal cord & eyes (!) occurs mainly during deep sleep — a process called glymphatic clearance because it involves glia and resembles lymphatic clearance in the body.

Sort:

Glymphatic clearance is essential to reduce daytime brain fog, "bags under eyes" & offset dementia. It is most effective when:

  1. sleep on either side
  2. elevate the head & neck ~5-10 degrees
  3. maintain a regular bedtime (+/-30min fine)
  4. avoid eating within ~2hrs* of bedtime (but avoid going to sleep with gnawing hunger)
  5. perform high-intensity exercise earlier in the day
  6. upon waking, walk, rebound* and/or perform an at-clavicle lymphatic massage**
