Is Instacart dying? Minimum batch pay lowered to just $4

Who's ready to work for free 🥕🛒

I received a big long email from Instacart the other day, as did all shoppers. The title of the email was "Creating new ways to earn", which is ironic considering what was within the email.

In typical corporate fashion, they sprinkled in a bunch of mumbo-jumbo to fool the less intelligent shoppers. Repeating stuff they had said before that we all knew about already, trying to pretend like previous updates were brand new again. I realized right away just how bad of a letter this was for shoppers as a whole. The Instacart Shoppers Subreddit was filled with other shoppers who were equally frustrated.

The most important information in the email was one sentence at the very end. Take a look at it for yourself:

It's the part that says the smallest/quickest batches will have a $4 batch pay. That is reduced from the $7 minimum batch pay that I'm used to, which itself is much less than Instacart used to pay. This means that 50% of the few orders that I have left to accept will now all pay me $3 less. It may not seem like a lot, but it adds up.

At this point, we are fully reliant on customer tips to make this job worthwhile. The $4 batch pay MIGHT cover gas, but it won't help go towards other forms of car maintenance. There will still be many $0 tip orders and people will accept them. You may wonder why, I think it's because they are either totally crazy or completely idiotic. I'm sorry, but I'm not shopping and delivering to somebody for what equals out to be close to no pay at all. Tips will become more important than ever now.

This coincides with the fact that Instacart has continually increased its fees for customers, so fewer people are choosing Instacart for their grocery needs. They've hired way too many people and the increased number of workers and fewer orders is causing people like me to barely be able to earn anything these days.

Do I think Instcart is dying? Sadly, I'd have to say yes. I just do not see how they will be able to sustain through the next few years. All the signs of bleeding profits are right there in front of your face. You'd be crazy to think they weren't forced to lower pay over and over just to stay afloat. It's not looking good for Instcart shoppers. My only hope is that during the fall I finally regain some of my orders and am able to earn a liveable wage.

If it wasn't for Hive, I'd be totally screwed at this point. I remain confident that another crypto bull market will soon be upon us and then it won't matter one bit whether I earn a single dime from Instacart. I look forward to the day of not having to think about money every single day. Until then, the show must go on and we have to adapt to new situations.

So people order a loaf of bread from the grocery store next door?

Weird.

Sorry that these guys are tightening up on the shoppers my friend. Maybe it's time to start looking for income elsewhere.

Can't even begin to explain how lazy some people are. There is this guy I deliver to all the time who lives .3 miles from the store, a whole 2 minutes. He was in his boxers chilling on the front porch last time
I brought stuff to him. And I know for a fact he has a nice car and could easily drive there himself and save $15.

That's what a lot of money could do !!! It makes you lazy.

I understand your frustration with Instacart's decision to lower the batch pay for the smallest/quickest batches. It's clear that this is a move that will benefit Instacart at the expense of shoppers.

I think it's important to remember that Instacart is a business, and their goal is to make money. However, I also believe that businesses have a responsibility to treat their employees fairly. In this case, I don't think Instacart is meeting that responsibility.

I think it's also important to remember that Instacart shoppers are not just employees. They are also customers of Instacart. They are the ones who are doing the shopping and delivery, and they are the ones who are making Instacart possible.

I think Instacart needs to take a step back and consider the impact that this decision will have on its shoppers. They need to remember that shoppers are not just numbers on a spreadsheet. They are real people who are trying to make a living.

I think they get away with so much because shoppers are not considered employees, but instead independent contractors. Some places such as California have laws that ensure a certain level of pay. Unfortunately my state has no law making sure I am paid fairly. If it weren't for generous customers this wouldn't be a job I could continue doing, no matter how fun it is.

$3 less per batch is a lot. That definitely would add up. It really does seem like you are working for tips. So can you see the tip amount in some case prior to going and just ignore all the non-tipping jobs? Basically just pick and choose orders that are worth your while

I’ve don’t 573 batches so far this year. That would equal out to $1719 and the year is barely halfway over. I could really use an extra almost $2k, but looks like that income will dissolve itself starting this week.

Yes thankfully you can see all tip amounts before accepting an order. Without that ability this job would be totally pointless to work.

Yeah that's a lot of money to lose for the year. It's a pretty big pay cut. Very unfortunate.

Damn... On 10 orders it's 30 dollars. On a hundred orders it's 300 dollars gone... That really is a lot!

The math doesn't lie. They're stealing from their shoppers and overcharging their customers. Sure seems like a recipe for failure to me.

Yeah, stick to it for as long as it remains profitable though.. It's still better than nothing ey!

!PIZZA

DOh! yea, I feel ur pain.. $4/batch totally sucks! This whole time/period seems to be nothing but no/less wins, but non-stop inflation and economy suck!

we shall survive and THRIVE! HIVE will get to .50 and that will be the best thing..

💪😎🤙🤜

It’s been a slow process but I think staying focused on our goals and not giving up will ultimately lead to great success.

😊😉 that's THE plan for us! well, I guess there's still more that 1/4 of 2023 to go.. maybe it will turn around and end up even better that it started!

Ah that’s brutal man sorry to hear of the decrease. I’m hoping that crypto can pull forward for you dude so you can do other things. One of the things that I’ve said to my wife though, when she gets discouraged about stuff like this: it’s good that we earned what we did when we did. Some people don’t earn anything or it gets eaten by foolishness! I’m glad you’ve made some money on there, it’s allowed you to do other things and pay some bills. Hopefully you can start to branch out into something else, get another thing going and then make the switch when things get too difficult to earn money.

A decrease in batch pay and a decrease in available batches both hitting at the same time 🤕

That totally sucks to hear, man! I hope you can leave all your worries behind have the best vacation.

Thanks! I'm focusing heavily on how great having a family vacation will be.

I wonder whether there is no another delivery company. Competition should be among companies as well.

I find it weird and very crazy to order something from a store next to you. What do we call that? Laziness right?
So weird!!!

100% it’s lazy. We have a lot of do-nothings in this world now.

Sad to know about that your earnings decreasing.

If it wasn't for Hive, I'd be totally screwed at this point

Me too man, me too!

We are truly lucky to be in this position. Looking forward to changing many lives in the future.

It's fun. I made more money in one day at my regular job than I did in 2 months on HIVE 😄

Isn't there any other job like instacart in your area?

At this point, we are fully reliant on customer tips to make this job worthwhile

So it looks like it is turning into a waitstaff job only your car suffers the wear and tear. ahhhh America.

I'm so fed up with corporate greed. I swear to the gods, these ceo's sit around and try to figure out the best way to screw the workers while the stock holders reap all the rewards.

Before I go on one of my corporate tyrades, I hope things work out for you!

Crazy that instacart is doing this to shoppers 😢
