Finding data

Have you ever been faced with such a situation that you will have to wipe out your entire phone or system? How about when you were going through your folders you discovered you never transferred the hardcopy documents into your PC. So where is the hard copy now? Maybe you did a little house clean up and set many things on fire. I know, you’ve lost it.

I hope you know the computer itself is not an Internet unless you interconnect it. It happened to me when my phone broke down in a single day and I was underrating cloud services by then. Those memorable photos, videos, wise quotes, jobs and whatever other vital things vanished.

The issue of data is not a new thing. It has become the new oil well. Never thought some decades ago, one will be redirecting focus to typed in digital info. Big firms are NOW hungry for it ALL. social media owners are making every effort to clone whatever enters their platform.

We have seen OpenAi with such early hedge, investors are NOW flogging its direction and as a private company, we have seen it grow in value of over $500 billion. Whether there will be a later market crackdown to correct the FOMO or not, the fact is, those figures are for now real.

We are going to enter into the basics in this article. So what's the digital space? It is tied down to computers upon computers. So what's a computer? An electronic device that accepts data as input, processes and stores this data for later recovery (as I earlier said, the best use of a computer is interconnection). So the key words here are ‘input, processing and output’. Of course you have to look at the word storage. In short, this article will be centered more on that.

Have we lost data? Maybe properly put, have we lost a lot of data? Is the information in the digital realms enough to take a huge percentage of human history? Of course not, the internet no matter how large it may seem is just a tip of the iceberg when it comes to human history and documentary. The first thing I want to assure you is this, every human that has come and gone has been a big history. How many were under-looked or not taken into account, very enormous.

As we speak, many are in the hunt for data recovery. So what triggered this article? Ok, my friend called me looking for data. He is working on research writing on the history of his clan. So now he is looking for data that is either scarce or completely no way to be found.

Older men have slept off in the grave with tangible data. I guess Google missed out in the interview. It was one of those questions I asked him, did you search the internet? There is no related information.

Did you pick this topic yourself, he said no. He mentioned the three topics he brought to the table that were all rejected and his supervisor decided to give this particular one. The fact is, even the current elders (professors inclusive) do not have track of this data and they are sending him on information recapture (data errand). Institutions are hungry for local data recovery. We can't doubt that some rich (bizarre history too) have been lost over time.

The advantage of the internet is that it is presenting itself as a ‘virtual immortal human invention’. Humans store data too but this data have to be transferred on time or it will be lost. This is the current issue we are facing especially in the African landscape. Ok, I wish him the best in his research. Even one of the suggested places I directed him to go has history over 100 years. Who will be there to attend to his needs? Indeed a very tight schedule.

To conclude, let me add, the hunt for data will still continue and yes I can say not all will be recovered. The internet came later and even as we speak is yet to penetrate many local places. As the elders continue to fade so will this history be entering oblivion.
