The need for speed

Defining efficiency will always belittle speed. There are lots of points that can be brought up here? Let's consider statements like speed in the wrong direction is a complete waste of time. Do you agree to this? I am not saying you should expand much on it, we are always open for learning. We have become very used to the grammar; ‘efficiency is better than speed'.

I am not here to prove a new theory per se, nevertheless, there is always a need to know when and how to apply theories. For instance, food is needed to stay healthy but overfeeding is something else, it can lead to obesity and some other health challenges.

In short, we can even say something concerning speed in the wrong direction. A wise investor once said, fail fast. His point here is the fact that if you speed up the rate of your failure stories, you will end up arriving at success early enough. On the other hand, if you keep procrastinating and waiting for some perfect timing and moments, you may never attain on time or perhaps become efficient very late.

“If a snake bites before it is charmed, the charmer receives no fee.”---Ecclesiastes 10:11 NIV. This scripture is worth reflecting upon as it breaks into many aspects of our daily lives. My concerns will be on how we apply this principle in our business. Sometimes you need to see how others are doing exactly what you are doing to observe the hedge they have over you or Vice versa.

We just brought in a new contract worker, it is something that I have been working on for a while NOW. Finding someone who understands your product or service demand can be challenging. Adding to that, when the person you are hiring is older than you, there is much skills needed in-between.

We haven't really been able to hit the service output we expected this year. We can say that work itself hasn't come in as expected or on the other hand, our capacity is not enough to attain that. Looking at the latter, I can say we are always struggling to deliver although we focus our attention on keeping it quality. Yes, quality takes time, it has been something we have been fanning ourselves with. So what can you say when you find someone that delivers quality in a quarter of your expected time? Not even half, I mean a quarter.

Ok, it means we have to sit up. It was something I have been discussing with my co-partner. I always told us that despite our pursuit for quality, we are missing out in proper time management in the process. If it takes us a day to achieve a few quality services, then our revenue is easily predictable. He never really took it seriously and thank God this new contract worker showed up. I mean, when one man beats the effort of an entire company you are left to ask questions like, what have we actually been doing.

To conclude, let me add, sometimes you don't need many people to achieve a lot, ALL you need is TOP notch professionals; ‘efficiency with speed well mixed’. Especially when you know you are operating from the SME chain of production, a sector that is limited by the working force. Consider how much you will have to spend on this workforce, secondly, how steady will the jobs be coming in to pay the needed team plus other business bills?

If one were to ask me to choose between efficiency and speed, I will still go for efficiency. Nevertheless, if being efficient is all you have to give in a market that time is waiting for no man, then it is a very siloed practice. Be efficient, add speed to it. Even while looking at a computer system, why businesses prefer it over manual calculators when talking of applications like the MS spreadsheets, it is beyond its efficiency; it is about work being done easier, more effectively and faster.
