I literally unvoted for this witness today because it said inactive for 2 months, and it was still running old software, so I figured they must have abandoned it. Is this not the case? I do see it is running now.

It was behind for the longest of time. There was a problem with the server they were on. It appears the made the change of switching to a new server with the hard fork and using the new software.
It looks like it is back online and up to date.

I am glad I saw this comment then, I have restored my vote for the @leofinance witness then. I just don't want to be voting for outdated or discontinued witnesses. There are some of those top witnesses that literally say they had resigned, and are still getting a ton of votes. When are governance votes supposed to expire now? A year from now or- and does this open up greater risk of hostile takeover if the community cannot rally together to vote? As if that would happen, but just asking. I think we proved last year that the community can Work together.
I understand. Since I watched the AMAs I knew they didnt abandon it, just there were server issues and developers working on the different projects. I am glad the HF made it a priority.
The vote expiration is one year from today. But that applies to the voters, not the ones who are voted upon. If the top ones said they resigned, we need to spread the word. Get people to pull their votes.
I am not sure what you mean by the community not rallying a vote in a hostile takeover. Please elaborate.

What I meant is that before Hive was created, the community had rallied enough users to try and vote our witnesses back in. I am very interested in what each of our witnesses vision is, however I also understand not all witnesses want the attention either.
It is important for users to do their own research and to support witnesses that they do agree with. I believe that 'decentralization' and 'censorship-resistance' are two of the important things we all do agree on. I like certain discussions about how this is an exercise in true freedom, or direct democracy, although it is more of a self organizing meritocracy and a decentralized autonomous community.
A year from now it will be up to us all to get users excited about voting for witnesses, this is such an exciting thing we are part of and users should spend some time this year thinking about the witnesses they vote for. I am grateful to everyone who is helping to create this data layer and keep it running so smoothly, and for everyone who is creating and curating content also.
What is the Hive philosophy? Each of us write our own piece of it, and it is an evolving conversation.
Ah okay. I get what you are saying now.
I agree. It is something that we are going to have to keep bringing to the forefront of discussion, especially if there are a large number of "dead votes" for witnesses. That could radically change the top 20.
If there are those who are "leaving" then we need to spread that word around too. No reason to keep voting for people who arent dedicated to the community.
