#historyonleo #onthisday On February 23rd 1903 Cuba, which became independent with US help during Spanish-American War, leases area of Guantanamo Bay to United States "in perpetuity". The area, initially serving as coaling and supply station for US Navy, becomes the oldest overseas naval base. The area is still under US sovereignty, although Cuba refused to pay lease and recently became infamous due to detention centre with alleged torture and other human rights abuses against prisoners US had brought during Global War on Terror.
