#historyonleo #onthisday On March 9th 2012 30 leaders of MS-13 and 18th Street Gang are transferred from maximum security prisons in El Salvador to lower security prison as part of the deal with Salvadorean government, brokered by Catholic Church. The deal, known as "Gang Truce", is aimed to decrease notoriously high murder rate in the country. The Truce will soon become controversial, especially when murder rate continues to rise and two major Salvadorean parties - left-wing FMLN and right-wing ARENA - become accused of making separate deals with gangs in exchange for votes and armed protection. By 2014 President Mauricio Funes would declare truce "dead".
