#historyonleo #onthisday On February 23rd 1988 Iraqi president Saddam Hussein launches Operation Anfal, counterinsurgency campaign against Kurdish separatists in the north of the country. Campaign, which coincided with final months of Iran-Iraq War, included atrocities against Kurdish civillians, including chemical warfare on unprotected villages. It is estimates that 50,000 - 100,000 people died till the end of campaign in September. Saddam Hussein was in 2006 tried and sentenced to death for genocide.
