tbh just being able to click around and play using the mouse already makes the whole gameplay experience way, WAY better. There were even mods (like DFHack) that tried to incorporate mouse-controls in the old version, but it was just trying to do something that the game wasn't designed to do (so lots of bugs, limited control, etc.). Nonetheless, being able to click around is SO good that all the community tolerated all the problems and bugs and kept using DFHack anyways.
Now that the game UI was recreated from scratch to allow mouse... superb!
