Burn the Bots (2)

Elon Musk has made ridding X of bots his number one problem for a while now, with limited success. His solution is rather to make us pay a small fee which would make the creation of bot accounts rather expensive and hopefully deter most users. The problem is that the World is quite accustomed to getting freeniums and I doubt many people would be happy paying even a minor fee for their social media accounts and people would simply seek alternative channels than cough out the necessary funds needed to make the platform better.

That's the unfortunate part of media platforms that require numbers and use us as their product, selling our data to advertisers. It becomes a numbers game and all the company cares about is the numbers going up. Imagine having thousands of followers and only a small percentage of them are humans. Well, we've had similar experiences on the Hive platform that have been addressed and I'd argue we're better for it. The numbers may have dipped, but we're at least sure of the authenticity of our engagements.

Unfortunately a platform like Twitter and Hive are quite different especially in terms of Ownership and governance. A platform like Twitter has way more to lose because of the heavy investors that have pumped funds into each. All of them having their own interests and it is a case of impressing those investors with the numbers. The purchase of X by Elon has revealed the somewhat shady strategies that management employs to keep these investors happy, even when it means lying right to their faces. It seems to me like transparency is sacrificed on the altar of growth.

As I've previously pointed, the expectations that people will simply play fair doesn't seem to be a realistic one these days. What's needed is a catalyst to drive the necessary change that needs to be made. In the end the consequences of letting bad players overrun any space might hurt more than whatever artificial benefits in terms of numbers they initially deliver.
