Why Not Just Quit?

I complain about my job so much some might wonder why I don't simply quit and be done with it. Well, I dislike uncertainty and would rather secure another (hopefully better) offer before I do leave the Organization. Of course these things are easier said than done, and luck plays a factor.

Yet leaving the company is certainly an option for me. Not a day goes bye that I don't consider the possibility. I sometimes play certain scenarios in my head where am laid off (I know it is a bit dark) and how best to forge ahead in the event of such an unfortunate scenario.

At present, getting laid off will be a disaster because I have very little to fall back on. Such thinking really puts into perspective the years of effort and just how much they truly pay off. When I think like this though, these are the immediate takeaways that follow - Save more, Invest more, and build/create more.

I believe if I had been a consistent builder over the years then there won't be nearly as much trepidation. Being able to walk away from anything on your terms is not just a huge flex, but a pointer of value.

Value isn't given though, it is earned. It requires high intention to succeed and showing up consistently in the execution of such intent. I am trying to re-build and documenting each day of that attempt. Let us see how well the road is a year from now.

Sort:

I did pull the trigger 3 years ago. Of course I did take the smart route. First securing a new job before handing in the resignation.
I told myself that when I got a deal good enough, didn’t want to get paid more just the same would be good enough, I would sign with my eyes closed. But that was harder then I thought after being at the company for 24 years. Throwing away a complete history.
Now looking back I am very happy with my new company. Should have done it sooner maybe.
Just like you I was complaining a lot and at a certain point you have to make a decision. Stop complaining and move on or leave.
It is always a risk of course but follow your heart combined with some help of the mind. Securing the personal financial situation is utmost important. But if you start searching now for a new job you will have options. Then you really know if you want to leave or not. An options will feel as power!

Good luck,
Peter

Thanks Peter...hopefully I'll revisit this post in a year with smiles

This is terrible to hear. I can think of no worse prison than to hate your job. I don't have anything dreamy in mind like loving your job. I think that is a situation reserved for TV shows and movies. The best most of us can hope for is to not hate what we do for a living and it is unfortunate that it seems as though you hate what you do for a living. I hope you are at least putting feelers out there to change to another organization and not just hoping that your current job will somehow magically become great one day, because I think we all know that this is very unlikely to happen.
