I think you're right. Apple was said to be in talks about a partnership involving the Hyundai, but reports say they were on-again, off again. Apparantly the parent company doesn't want to be seen as "making cars for Apple" but does want a slice of Apple's affluent and loyal user base.

They want their cake and eat it too.
The bottom line is they will be making cars for Apple and that would likely make up the bulk of their sale. Hyundai isnt one of the top manufacturers anyway so they would likely come out way ahead through that venture.

They put out a big press release denying they were interested in working with Apple and then somebody must have reminded them of the iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch, so they had to walk that back. Their affluent user-base will buy anything with an Apple logo on it. That's why everyone is suing them, try to get their customers.
Apple has a live-streamed event tomorrow, so I will be watching to see what new products are announced.

Apple is one of the biggest brands in the world.
There is no way that someone will not partner with them to build them cars even if the Apple logo is what is on them.
That is a no brainer. Hell if I was a traditional auto manufacturer and Apple knocked on my door, I would be like Hell Yeah.
