TECH JOBS IN 2022; LESSONS & REQUIREMENTS.

in LeoFinance2 years ago (edited)

On 6th January, 2022, I was called upon to interview 3 candidates for the role of “Product Manager” at a crypto-currency startup company located in Delta State, Nigeria with two digital products in the market; https://www.kochure.com/ and https://gethometown.app/

This role attracts $800 monthly salary and a total of $9,600 annual take home, which is still a lot of money in this clime by the way (Nigeria). In this particular post, I will be sharing some lessons I took from that experience and from my conversation with the 3 candidates.

Lesson 1
There are many job roles in the world today that doesn’t require you to have a formal education; that is, lack of school certificate or poor grade is no longer excuse for you not to follow your dreams. Technology has created a level playing ground all around the globe.

Lesson 2
There’s a skill gap in the market today. Many high end roles are waiting to be filled because suitable candidates haven’t been found yet. It is not enough to learn a skill, you have to make sure the skill you’re learning is relevant to the prevailing issues in the world today. Is my skill-set matching vacancies and the needs of employers?

Lesson 3
Age is no longer a barrier! It only takes an idea, vision and discipline to change the course of your life forever. The founder of the crypto-currency company I told you about is a young man who is still in his twenties, yet he’s paying people’s salaries in 6 digits. Now that's a big feat for someone in this part of the world. So beyond seeking jobs, you as a skilled and competent person can also create a product/service that will be a solution to one problem or the other.

Lesson 4
Intentionality will get you started, focus will help you follow through on a course. The truth is there will be distractions. But once you have figured what you want and what suits your interest from the onset, you will stay resolute to your course.

Lesson 5
It is important that you get ready for the opportunity that you’ve been waiting for! What’s your level of readiness for the dream job, dream life, dream skill that you have been anticipating? When opportunity comes, it is often too late to prepare. I could tell from some of their CV that they had to rush in putting them together, which was considered as a form of passiveness on their part.

Lesson 6
Have a full understanding of the role you’re applying for and the company you’re applying to. In other words, carry out some research. It’s the least you can do! I’ll close this post with a short description of a Product Manager.
According to the product manager,
source the following are the roles and responsibilities of a Product Manager:

  1. Product Specialist
  2. Business Specialist
  3. Leadership
  4. Sets Product Vision And Roadmap
