Most newbies (even oldies) get confused with the 4 keys + 1 Seedphrase (aka Master Password) we get while creating a Hive account. In one of his latest threads, @onealfa.leo asked whether everyone on Hive knows how to use them and how to protect them. Well, I know, so I decided to make an infographic to address the first question.

The tiered key system of Hive is pretty unique as compared to other chains where you only get one seed phrase. If it's compromised, you are fucked for good. On hive, different keys provide built-in security against user account compromise. Each key allows you to perform a different set of functions:

Share this with your newbie frens and help them understand how this shit works. They need to know the gravity of the immense power which comes with owning your keys.

There are not 5 key pairs, but only 4!
The so called "master password" is not a key, not even a password, but a seed that, used in combination with the username, allows to recompute all 4 private keys. We should rename it to something different to avoid confusion.
Thanks a lot for the clarification @arcange. Made the changes in my blog.
I think "Master Password" as a term is fine. An average user doesn't care about the terminology as much as its meaning.
Seedphrase is kind of a master password that gives you the ultimate access to your account. Infact "Seedphrase" is a confusing term, especially for newbies.

It's not! I don't think anyone would want to login into an app with something called a "seed" or "account recovery string".
On the other hand, using the word "password" encourages people to do so, which is wrong.
Damn, now it makes sense to me. Since we should not use the master password ever except for account recovery.
We must do this change, especially for security reasons.
I was only thinking about myself but you are right. Other people might use it just because it's more convenient than using multiple keys.
Glad you got it 🤓
Great infographic and important to only use the posting key most of the time. Active for wallet/voting related stuff.
The memo key is less talked about but kinda cool.
You could probably add on the info graphic on how to send an encrypted memo (although it doesn't hide the amount or the account you send to, just the actual memo itself).
For anyone who wants to know, in the memo box, put the # symbol at the beginning, followed by a space, then your message, and it will (hopefully) work:
The recipient will then be able to read the memo by clicking the padlock button and using their memo key:
The simple rule of thumb are 2, this.

This is an excellent inforgraphic covering the basics. Promoting HIVE on Twitter will be much easier with material like this (for those who are engaged in those activities). I have long given up on traditional social media.

I remember two days ago, I wanted to power-up some Hive for the Hive Power-Up Day. While using Hivesigner I tried logging into my account to approve the power-up transaction and I got a message telling me the password is incorrect. So I applied my Active Key and it worked.
Thank you for bringing up this topic, @finguru
Be careful while using your active key bro. It's quite important since the money gone from your account cannot be recovered.
All the best. LFG!

Great infographics. Some of it I had to learn over time after my old laptop failed. Just having my posting key at that time made things a bit rough but I was able to fully recover my account using the keys that I recovered.
