From not being able to use ranged Attackers to them being able to attack from the first position! Boy how the tables have turned in the Weekly Battle Mage Secrets. Well, let’s try to tackle this one, shall we? In this episode, we will try to win a match with the special Ruleset of Close Range. First, I will try to highlight the specifics of this ruleset and what is best to use there. After that I will try to give a run down of which cards I used in this specific battle and what strategy I was following with this one. Last but not least we will take a look at the actual example battle.

Close Range

First things first, let’s talk about the Close Range Ruleset. It allows Ranged attackers to attack from the first position which actually takes away their biggest weakness. It incentivizes to play Ranged attackers more and gives a good variety into the game. Although it really takes away a big negative side effect I still think that Magic attackers are still more superior but let’s take a look on what else there is with this Ruleset!

In general, I think that this ruleset is a pretty cool one, since all the Splinters have a pretty good set of Ranged attackers. But and this is important, this ruleset is not limiting you to only these kind of monsters. In Splinterlands it is always important to see the whole picture and in our specific case, we had the Poison Ruleset activated as well. So what does it mean to us? We could not just focus on the Ranged attackers but also had to take into consideration to protect ourself against the Poison.

Strategy & Cards

This Poison Ruleset was also the reason why I chose the strategy as described as follows. With the Forgotten One we have a card that has the Immunity Ability. This means that it is immune against the poison and that it will not take any damage. On top of that, I tried to take very healthy cards, in order to get ahead of the poison as well as take very good hitters in order to deal the highest damage possible!

This is then the reason why Tenjii Striker and Mordeus are in this squad. Both are very heavy hitters, especially with the boost of Tarsa. Additionally, they are getting more health due to Tarsa’s boost and last but not least they are also not restricted by any armor since the third ruleset of this battle was the non armor one.

With this being said, there is still one strategy that could be important for the closed ranged specific aspect of this battle. The Venari Marksrat with its Martyr Ability is a very important piece to this puzzle! With its Ability we want this card to die since both cards next to it will get boosted in every stat. Not only that but because it now would be able to attack from the first position, it would be totally legitimate to use this card as puffer in order to take and absorb some damage. This is also a very common strategy. But again because of the poison I decided to keep the card in the middle of the pack so we can give a boost to several cards at once!

Example Battle

With our strategy being pretty straight forward the battle seemed to be pretty interesting. Our opponent had the higher level cards with a very similar strategy! He also chose the Fire Splinter with the Forgotten One as the main protagonist of this battle. Well, but he did not think of our special attacking order. Not only were we able to kill his backline pretty quickly but we were also able to absorb the majority of his attacks into buffer cards and deal a good amount of damage with our boosted cards. Especially after Martyr has triggered it was game over for our opponent.

I think that in the end the Close Range Ruleset was a little bit secondary since the Poison did the majority of the job. But like I said previously, in Splinterlands it is not always about the best cards or rigid thinking. You always have to adapt to the specific situation in order to secure the win and that is what we did today! 😊
