People need Hive to operate on the blockchain. Someone has to provide that (most likely the applications).
That's the plan indeed. That's why RC delegations represent a development that should facilitate the entire process a great deal for dapps.
Let us see what the charts look like in a month or two if the growth of @Splinterlands keeps it up.
I don't see why not it will not keep up the pace. In a month or so is the presale for the new set of cards. In October they will be released and the options will broaden for new players, because they can invest in packs of cards at the base price.

Excitement and momentum are tough to keep up. Hopefully they will be able to do it.
I see @splinterlands signed up 5,000 new people yesterday.

Yup. Momentum is hard to keep. But also there are lots to look for besides what I mentioned in the reply. Very soon player staking option will be added. Brawls 2.0 (that's a significant update for one of the major components of the game) is practically ready but not released just yet, probably the scaling issues messed up the schedule.
