Freedom of speech is one topic that should really be talked about. The freedom of speech has not really been freedom of speech as the case maybe. Individuals are being violated to speak their minds especially by the Government or some powerful individuals. A Lot of people have resolved in being silent and refusing to voice their concerns, advocate for their rights, and participate in public discourse because of fear of repression or marginalization.
Freedom of speech is a fundamental human right that allows individuals to express their opinions, ideas, beliefs, and thoughts without fear of restraint, or legal repercussions from the government or other authorities. Individuals were not supposed to be suppressed or restricted from expressing their opinions, ideas, or beliefs because it is their right to express unpopular or controversial opinions without being punished in order to foster dialogue and exchange of ideas in the society.
I learnt about a Young Man in my state that was arrested because he expressed his opinion about the Government authority and i was really bothered why the Government will arrest an individual over expressing his opinions over bad leadership in the Government and that was when i told myself that the freedom of speech we feel we have isn't really freedom of speech as the case maybe. I believe that honest dialogue and reviews from the people should not be restricted. Everyone should be given their fundamental human right of expressing their own opinion. While governments may claim to protect national security or public order, they also control and suppress information that challenges their authority. In this case, the media houses have roles to play in ensuring that individuals who expressed their views about the government or powerful persons in the state are given protection. People should not be exposed to the whimsical nature of oppressive dispositions of governments.
In the online space, there are concerns about corporate control over speech. Companies like Facebook, Google, and Twitter have immense power to shape public discourse by setting and enforcing content moderation policies, leading to questions about accountability and transparency. There has been a recent trend in social media when one tries to lend a voice and opinion you will notice you will be restricted. At some point i thought it was done to curb against harmful stuffs but i later discovered that there were alot of things on social media that should get restrictions and should not go viral but unfortunately such things do not get the restrictions and i keep asking why? The issue in the spread of misinformation and disinformation has become a significant concern. False or misleading information can influence public opinion, undermine trust in institutions, and even pose threats to public health and safety and these should really get those restrictions.
In my opinion i think a line should be drawn between hate speech and free speech. The Government in particular have used the issue of hate speech to silence and stop individuals' right to express their opinions thereby denying the people their right and freedom. Individuals should be allowed to exercise their freedom of speech by advocating for policies that protect and promote freedom of speech without fear of being sanctioned.
