70 Crypto Scam Sites Seized by US Authority

Seventy domains, that used to scam the Russian community has been seized by office of the District Attorney in Brooklyn. The scams involved Facebook ads that were deceptive featuring Elon Musk through deepfake.

A total of $5 million were lost by over 20 residents in Brooklyn and additional victims throughout the country.

On Thursday, the District Attorney Office in Brooklyn shared that it's virtual currency unit "successfully disrupted a cryptocurrency scam operation that targeted members of the Russian community.”

Details of the announcement:

The victims were lured into making what turned out to be bogus investments by responding to Facebook ads about investment opportunities then getting a call from a purported investment advisor, who spoke in Russian and guided them into making cryptocurrency transactions on what were actually bogus websites.

The inquiry found that more than twenty investors in Brooklyn lost more than $1 million, while other victims from across the country lost a total of $4 million. The notification also states that the cluster of 70 related domains has been taken offline.

Promoting crypto investments, these scam ads frequently featured a deepfake of Elon Musk, according to details by the Brooklyn District Attorney Office. Furthermore, victims were reached out by "investment advisors" speaking Russian and guiding them through setting up accounts on illicit websites.

After transferring funds, the victims found themselves not accessing their accounts or asking for additional fees.

The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office said that the DA's Office goal has been to disrupt the fraud by seizing control of the phony websites since retrieving any stolen funds is exceedingly difficult because Russia is beyond U.S. jurisdiction.
