For me, success is a mixture of all these actions: first, finding the right project to invest time and effort in, as well as how we all need that touch of luck to achieve it. Although I must be aware that if a "whale" bets its money on a project, that denotes a certain degree of confidence and of course it will call many more investors.

That is probably a very strong approach. Makes a lot of sense to me. You have the baseline in your research and understanding of the project. After that, you can turn the attention to who else is seeing what you do.
Rarely are we so astute we see something nobody else does. Who are those other people is the question.
