The Romans did reach Scotland (just), but this was only built in the 1800s (and not for games). It was built to provide paid work to many of the tradesmen in the town who were suffering financial difficulties at the time.

Oh, I see. Prague city wall was built for similar reasons in the 14th century. We still call it the Hunger Wall :))

I had no idea about that. Considering it was built in the 14th century it would be easy to think it was for defensive purposes.

Well, the did not build it up just to feed the peasants, obviously - the city protection was important too. Yet we can call it one of the very first attempts to establish a social security system in my country ;)
