Google unveils "AI Mode" search engine, signaling a new era for search

After a quarter century, Google is betting that the future of search will be AI. On Tuesday, it introduced a feature in its search engine called AI Mode, that will function like a chatbot, allowing people to start a query, ask follow-up questions and use the company’s AI system to deliver comprehensive answers

“It’s a total reimagining of search,” said Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO. In tests of the feature, people dramatically “changed the nature of how they are interacting with search”

The company has been hesitant to fully embrace AI because it has so much to lose: its search business generated nearly $200 billion last year, more than half of its total sales

During testimony in a case against Google this month, an Apple’s top executive, Eddy Cue, said Google search traffic had declined for the first time in 22 years

Interesting to witness the evolution of Internet search...

Absolutely!

The best approach, as far as I've seen, is to use decentralized engines, where the indexation is performed on self-hosted servers, like with "SearX". In those cases the data providers have no stake in the processing and promotional game, unlike AI models (that - or who - can cheat & lie) and for-profit companies like Google.

I'll have to check out SearX.

I've been using Presearch for years now, which has built-in AI as well.

Also, Neutaro is working a Cosmos-based decentralized search index.
