RE: The 100 Points Question of The Day: if someone steals your car and the cops find it, what are they(the cops) going to do with it?

Being new to all this stuff, I'll ask a dumb question.

Can we verify the current ownership and origin of these coins? I assume it's possible, since blockchain data is all public, yeah? So is there a glaring public record of:

  • Assets X thru Y were minted/mined by Bitfinex
  • Things happened, said Assets ended up in sus wallet(s)
  • Trail of transactions now tells story of Assets moving from sus wallets to wallets controlled by US gov

Part of the beauty of blockchain, as I understand it, is to be able to trace things like this with relative ease. Or did something shady occur to obfuscate this trail of transactions?

I don't have a solution to propose, but am trying to learn more about the nuance of issues like this. Thank you for your patience! 😅

It is indeed that simple.

Ah! Then I appreciate your insistence that the coins should be returned.

I suppose those against that (read: the US gov) might argue that the transactions that happened during the "shady period" are still under investigation, evidence is being gathered, court-this, legal-that.

I'll have to go find some articles on this story to dig in deeper. Thanks for bringing it to light for me.
