For the tenth month in a row, fewer people from Canada are heading to the United States, and the numbers keep dropping. The latest figures came out this week from Statistics Canada and the U.S. National Travel and Tourism Office. In September 2025, only about 1.2 million Canadians crossed into the U.S. by car, plane, or train. That's down 8 percent from September last year, and the slide started back in December 2024.
Places like Buffalo, New York, and Detroit, Michigan, usually filled with Canadian license plates, but border agents say it's quieter than ever. The Canadian dollar sits weak against the U.S. one, hovering around 72 cents. Gas prices up north are high, and flights cost more too. Plus, some folks worry about new U.S. entry rules that kicked in this summer, like extra paperwork for certain visitors.
In Vancouver and Toronto, travel agents report bookings to Florida or California are way off – people pick staycations or head to Mexico instead. This matters beyond just empty hotel rooms in Niagara Falls. U.S. shops and restaurants near the border lose big bucks – think billions over a year.
Canadian airlines feel it too, with fewer seats filled on routes to Las Vegas or New York. Who wants to pay extra for the same vacation?
