#Piratesunday: 2009 Solomon Islands One Dollar HMS Golden Hind Commemorative Silver Coin

image.png

”Blackbirds tend to like shiny things.” ~ The Bloody Raven

This little silver bullion coin was a gift from @punkysdad last Christmas on a visit to a coin shop just off the city center of Richmond. I know he bought it while I was preoccupied with the shiny in another coin display case looking for a retaliatory silver gift.

The Coin of that Scurvy Sea Dog

Though not at War with Spain for a good part of the 16th Century the moniker of Elizabeth’s Sea Dog’s was nickname by the Spanish to English privateers raiding and capturing Spanish shipping. While the crown of England can deny any business with these preying vessels the Spanish simply considered them as pirates and summarily executed them. One Captain that earned the most Spanish ire was that Francis Drake, later knighted as Sir Francis Drake. But he became to known by his victims as “El Dracque.”🦇

I’d rather admire the legendary ship than the man that arguably started England on the road to Naval superiority, but we can’t talk about the ship without mentioning the fellow himself.

Drake was to lead the Expedition to explore the South American coast and the sea beyond the treacherous Straight of Magellan but also as a Privateer to inflict as much damage to the Spaniards as possible. No English ship have yet sailed beyond into Pacific waters. But Drake did see the Pacific from Panama years earlier and made it his personal goal to plunder the Spaniards.

Armed with a letter of Marque and the blessing of Queen Elizabeth I, aside of a weather related setback, Drake finally departs Plymouth aboard the Pelican with four accompanying ships and 164 men.

The other four ships were The Christopher, The Swan, The Elizabeth, and the Marigold.

On the Atlantic crossing Drake and his squadron had success attacking and plundering Spanish and Portuguese ships acquiring the Mary as Drake’s sixth Ship. However, the expedition suffered a severe attrition of able-bodied crew that by the time they made it to St Jullian Argentina they had no choice but to scuttle the Christopher, the Swan and their new acquisition the Mary. This left Drake down to three vessels to take refuge at St Jullian before negotiating the Straight of Magellan.

It was at this point Drake decided to rename Pelican to the Golden Hind in honor of his patron and voyage sponsor Sir Christopher Halton whose Crest was that of a golden hind, a female red deer.

Emerging into the Pacific Ocean in September 1578 an encounter with stormy conditions led to the loss of the Marigold with all hands and the Elizabeth damaged and made the decision to return to England. Drake’s flagship, The Golden Hind was the remaining ship.

While pirates were common throughout the Spanish Main in the 16th Century, It was practically unheard of in the Pacific. Complacency gave way to total surprise to the Spaniards as Drake proceeded Northward along the South American coast attacking and pillaging unprotected Spanish towns.

At Peru’s main port of El Callao, Drake learned of a Panama bound treasure ship, the Cagafuego (Fireshitter) 😮, or formally known as the Nuestra Señora de la Concepción.

Bonus Keychain Coin

Some have you have likely seen this before as a pleasant gift from @monstergoldjam in a package I received from him last summer. Out of all my English Half pennies, even with a hole this is still the best condition of the copper fleet. My !8th Century Frigate keys will be on this key chain.

Drake caught up with the heavily burdened Spanish treasure ship on March 1st 1579 off the coast of Ecuador. Under reduced sail and disguised as a Merchantman the Golden Hind pulled up along side and simply demanded that the Spanish Captain surrender. When Capitan San Juan de Antón refused, the Golden Hind loosed a broadside taking out the Cagafuego’s Mizzenmast before being boarded by the English attackers. The Spanish ship was taken totally by surprise and quickly surrendered.

It took a week to offload the wealth of the Cagafuego onto the Golden Hind at a secluded stretch of Ecuadorian shoreline. In that time Drake treated their prisoners well, gave gifts to the Officers and distinguished passengers of the Cagafuego along with a letter of safe passage before off loading his captives.

The Haul;

  • 360,000 Pesos in coin.
  • 26 Tons of Silver
  • Half ton of gold
  • Porcelain
  • Jewelry

Drake continued North as far as Vancouver Island and then back south claiming a region of California he named as New Albion on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I. The Crew of the Golden Hind established a camp and resupplied there before the western crossing of the Pacific back to Plymouth England.

The Golden Hind sails into Plymouth September 26, 1580, one ship with 59 crew remaining of the five ships with 164 men that started out December 1577.

With the treasures offloaded under guard at Trematon Castle, a ceremony on board the Golden Hind presided by Queen Elizabeth I to observe knighthood bestowed upon Sir Francis Drake.

As the key Sponsor the English Queen's share was £160,000 which paid off the government debt of £120,000. Other stakeholders and sponsors received an astounding return of £47 for each £1 invested. Meanwhile, Drake’s log with all of his personal notes were considered State secrets and the crew sworn to secrecy, perhaps the exception of circumventing the world as navigational achievement after all, Knighthoods are not just given out for nothing. Eventually, the Spaniards figured out who Sir El Dracgue's employer is.

The Bloody Raven's notes on this Golden Hind(e) Coin

This coin appears to be one of at least a 2009 Year set of three coins; HMS Beagle, HMS Warrior, and the HMS Golden Hinde.
The Numista rarity index quotes a 97, from common 1 to 100 rare. However, the HMS Warrior has a quoted low mintage of 5000 so I would assume the HMS Golden Hind would be the same.
Being a mere 0.6mm thickness I would tend to expect a few weak areas of the strike, but it was a remarkably consistent cameo strike all around.
Four tiny Toning spots on the Reverse only, two at 12 o’clock and two at 4. This doesn’t affect the grade but does distract in eye appeal.
I’d prefer the Ship being the dominant subject of the coin rather than sharing coin space with the Luckiest Sea Dog of a Captain that sailed the Seas.

Since I got this as a Christmas gift, it’s a keeper! Thank yea @punkysdad

I absolutely like your coins. As usual very well written. The golden hinde silver is one of a coin. The first time I seem three images on one side of a coin. I enjoy it especially when you mentioned in details how this coin came to be. We can learn so much about the heritage too, thanks to our bloggers spending that much time producing tuitive blogs. I know there is so much effort involved. I know it's hard to believe, when I did my posts, the first one took me 3 hours and it was a simple one. I appreciate you !

I sat in with a local Coin Club and you felt like you were talking to Historians more than coin collectors. I remember one Ancient Coins collector who displayed an array of ancient coins on his bourse table and off the top of his head can tell you everything about the coin I pointed to. Dates, Emperor’s name, the military and political achievements, how he acquired the coin, etc.

I am mildly dyslexic, and my left hand can type faster than my right hand resulting in lots of transposition errors. It takes a certain level of concentration to type correctly and took me all week to piece together this post. I ferociously proofread and make corrections for spelling and grammar. Why? As a nurse by profession, I need to keep up my practice of professional writing standards for proper documentation of my patient’s exact status, condition, and accuracy. Because I can get in trouble for a pharmaceutical error.
Thank God for the inventor of Autocorrect.

Thanks for coming aboard @olympicdragon

That is a very pretty piece of silver sis! I agree with you; the ship should have been more prominent! The detailing even of Elizabeth is very striking.

Very definitely a keeper! Thanks for sharing @kerrislravenhill and have a lovely evening!

There are at least 40 other coins, over 9 counties that commemorated the Golden Hind(e) with or without Sir El Dracque!. You can bet I will find a few more. And I made extra care NOT to mix up Elizabeth I with Elizabeth II, a 429 year difference.
Thanks for coming aboard @elizabethbit

Lots of Elizabeth's for sure! Thanks again for sharing sis!💜🤗

You just can’t help yourself from making me jealous can you….
Awesome as usual Kerris.

Very nice coin from @punkysdad!
The Royal Canadian Mint is just right for you.
They all sorts of designs, sis!

Hugs and kisses, 🤗❤️😘

I don’t think this 2009 coin was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint. The Royal Australian was minting Solomon Island coins since 2012 and didn’t name the previous mint.
It’s a piece of information I cannot find online, the Krause Coin Catalog would have that if I can only get it from the publisher or a bookstore that carries that $100 phone book sized reference guide.
Always, with love 🤗🌺❤️

Did I say Royal Canadian Mint.... hahaha!!!

Another beautiful collection of coins. That Pirate ship coin looks lovely thou, and as you've said, yeah Prolly the more of it showing.
I enjoyed the history attacked to the coins, it shows how intentional you're about them. Awesome.
Much Love Sis💜🤗

The real treasure is the history behind the coins. 💍
Thanks for your support @queenstarr ❤️🖤❤️

Totally agree💍

It's my pleasure, enjoyed the post🖤❤️🖤

I guess the Spanish were Bloody well pissed with England when they found out that he was working under Elizabeth I's authority. They were back at war again not long afterwards didn't they?

PD

It may be one reason but I'm not certain with the exact issue but a cumulative of reasons leading up to their traditional rivalry. All that gold and silver would have built plenty of ships for the Spaniards. Meanwhile, Drake captured for the English the equivalent of their country's GDP.
Drake continued to fight the Spaniards but was not very successful. He died of Dysentery rather than in combat and was buried at sea.

Much love. Frign Drake was a total pirate! Commissioned and legal but, still.

untitled.gif

He's the pirate you never heard of😝

Quelling a mutiny or two, losing 5 ships and over a hundred crew too. The Elizabeth never made it back to England. So it was getting expensive for this expedition.

He had to offer a wage to the remaining crew since the "No Prey, no Pay" policy wasn't exactly working out at first until Drake got real lucky and won the Cagafuego "Cannonball lottery".

Any luck in Vegas?

Safe Journey @enginewitty

"Whit a bonny piece o' shiny!" 😉 -Keptin

The Golden Hinde may be famous but I'd settle for The Silverton at any century, and a much better Keptin with her.

What an impressive History the Golden Hind had @kerrislravenhill!!😀 Stacking is always important, but then you learn the History behind the coin....awesome!!🤗

This is one of the most famous and most storied, in fact and fiction, ship in maritime history. In my opinion, the wealth from this treasure haul helped accelerate development of England's maritime economy and Navy while arresting the expansion of the Spanish naval assets at a critical time in history.

Knowledge is the real treasure @nildighonto
Thanks for dropping in.

Incredible specimens my friend @kerrislravenhill, I would also like to be able to see the keys of this 8th century frigate 😁

Should the Crypto Gods ever bless me with a Crypto Windfall, my dream is to retire aboard my own replica of an 18th Century Light Frigate sailing ship.
And this ship is where I can stow my silver treasures.
For now, I have a white Nissan Leaf Electric Vehicle. it has an electronic key fob.

Thanks for the support @marbrym

Ahhh haha is a dream. I hope that you can get it. It is my best wish for you 😉

That is a very pretty piece of silver sis! I agree with you; the ship should have been more prominent! The detailing even of Elizabeth is very striking. Upvote and sharing 🖤❤️

There are about 40 other coins from various Commonwealth countries that also celebrated the exploits of the Golden Hinde in different styles and emphasis so I may just have an opportunity to find the right coin.

Thanks for coming aboard @rickyislam ☠️⛵️

Nice to see that you found a 1973 photo of a Replica of the Golden Hind!

El Dracque may have treated his prisoners with respect and dignity but treated his crews with typical 16th Century authoritarian style of the times. He ended up executing his second having been charged with a ridiculous crime (other than calling it Mutiny) on top of the atrocious loss of men and ships. Plenty of soapy drama in the personal accounts too. 🦇

The Brits sure love the Golden Hind(e), there are four other replicas that existed in varying quality and accuracy. The 1973 version was crafted by genuine shipwrights using traditional techniques used of the 16th century, then traveled around the world before retired as a Tourist trap as you see in the picture.

Thanks for Commenting @silvertop
