Was actually recommended by my doctor, I take a liter first thing in the morning, then try finish up 4 more before the day runs out

Very good advice, since I often forget to drink water, and I don't drink enough. As you say it is very important to hydrate.
Try to sip some water hourly or too , it helps to keep you hydrated

Don't wait until you are tasty, a sip of water 2hrs interval is not bad anyway
