As far scams/pickpockets, I was once a victim of this. I discovered it only seconds after it was done, and I got my stuff back without beating the shit out of the one who had it.
I think either the cup has some sticky thing inside it that can hide a stone on top of it or he is using his hands very skillfully to place the stones very carefully.
I lost a laptop inside a bag behind my back in a bus. Did not recover.
