The 2012 version of Total Recall was bad. It's OK for it to be made different from the original movie, but it was just unbelievable in ways which were too distracting for proper enjoyment of the movie.
The original Total Recall was also before Peak Arnold was reached.

You're right, it lost a bit of the sense of what the original wanted to convey.
