What made Apple's iPhone a smashing success immediately in 2006 wasn't the actual phone; it was the App Store. Apple had the foresight to set up the App Store and load it up with apps by developers. For years there were commercials based on the theme "there's an app for that." Without the apps from the App Store, iPhone would have been like a BlackBerry device.
(For reference, Casino Royale (the 2006 James Bond movie starring Daniel Craig) was made and released in the pre-iPhone era.)
