People hate ads until they become business owners, suddenly, it's okay to target(track) specific users and sell to them with their ad campaigns.
Every time someone talks about wanting ads to never exist, I wonder if they have single digits IQ.
I can't bring myself to understand how anyone doesn't realize that without ads, everything would collapse.
If I need to buy something that can only be found across seven seas(bare in mind that I have no knowledge that it can only be found that far away), what do you think my better chance of getting it for the lowest possible price is?
By searching endlessly for it, maybe door to door, without anyone being allowed to tell me where I can find it, only if they have it or not?
Or
By browsing through ads on platforms likely to sell these things?
If it wasn't obvious, if I do it the first way, I will likely get robbed many times. It will cost me a lot before I can get to buy said thing, that's if I can afford to travel across seven seas and continue on asking.
It is tempting to ask why shouldn't people be allowed to refer me to where I can find said thing, well, that would be advertising.
In some cases, it could be a non-paid ad — usually this comes from past satisfied customers — or it can be an affiliate promotion, I go there, let it known who referred me and a commission will be paid to them.
These are the layers that needs to exist to make it easier for end-users to find things. If we eliminate advertising, we drive up costs of trades.
Everything becomes subscription based at some point, and you likely will hate it still.
The reason you'll hate it is because what you hate about ads is tracking, so when you opt for paying a subscription, you're saying don't track me and show me relevant things that I might want. As a result, when you eventually need those things, you'll struggle to find them as ads are not targeting you and platforms are generally not trying to sell anything to you, as you did ask them not to.
Do people realize just how much shit is on the internet and how if ads and algorithms did not exist to filter out and promote what was relevant to people, individually, no one would be able to use this shit?
I don't see how ads in Gen AI will be any different from the social platforms we use daily.
If I asked a Gen AI for the best stock trading firms, I would be happy to see ads from those that believe they are the best. Deciding to use those platforms are my choice.
I can understand when people hate ads that pop up everywhere, it can hurt the eyes and I hate them too, but claiming to hate ads generally and not want them m shows how unaware a person is to how the world works and what keeps it running in the best state.
Brave blocks ads across the web but still shows you ads.
So how bad could ads in Gen AI be?
Not any worse than we already know, it's not like Aliens will be selling to us, it's the same companies and businesses that will be bidding for ad spaces. If at all we should be fighting a war, it should be about decentralizing data controls and pushing for development of privacy-preserving solutions to ad techs, especially in the age of AI, not calling for ads to not exist.
