There is a push by governments and environmentalists to "decarbonize" transportation and make it more "environmentally friendly". For this purpose, they believe that the use of electric vehicles (EV) is the solution for this problem. Some governments have gone to the extreme to ban gas powered vehicles.
Lithium-ion batteries are one of the forms of energy storage (the most popular) of the EV's. Lithium is being mined aggressively and its price is increasing due to the high demand.
Lithium mining is intensive and generates carbon dioxide. Lithium transportation also generates carbon dioxide. Lithium refining and conversion to carbonate or hydroxide is also energy demanding. Reference To produce a lithium ion battery requires 3 times as much energy as to produce a regular car battery. Reference
Lithium disposal also generates carbon dioxide. Landfill fires are common where lithium ion batteries have been deposited.

"Decarbonizing" transportation is now critical. Then the pressure on the gas will decrease. Moreover, there are some vehicles in our regions that emit large amounts of black sludge which is harmful to the environment.
