Impact of AI on user retention in Web 3 games

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing field of technology that has been adopted in many gaming experiences.

AI can be used to create more realistic and immersive game play, bots can provide opponents in single-player or online modes, allowing players to compete against a computer-controlled opponent. Bots can also provide a challenge for more experienced players, allowing them to test their skills against a more difficult opponent.

But there are some potential pitfalls associated with using it. I’m writing this post from the perspective of a gamer who’s spent a couple of years playing a Web 3 game - Splinterlands against both AI bots and humans.

One major downside to using AI on gaming experience is its cost. Depending on the complexity of the project, implementing an effective artificial intelligence system into a game can be very costly for developers and gamers alike due to both hardware costs as well as software development costs.

These costs later translates into expenses for the gamers which sometimes negatively affects the gaming experience and in turn user retention, because many people actually come for the human experience. As as a result, those who are able to pay for the services automatically develop an upper hand over those who don’t, which can be frustrating to players who aren’t using AI, again, negatively impacting user retention.

Also because users of the AI have invested some amount of financial resources into the game, they naturally tend to want to make back their return on investment as quickly as possible making them to continuously use the bots and ruining the human experience for everyone.

Another issue related to implementing artificial intelligence into web 3 games is that it may not always provide an enjoyable or balanced gameplay experience compared to one without any form of machine learning involved at all.

While having intelligent computer opponents may add challenge and realism, they might also make things too difficult or unpredictable depending upon how sophisticated their programming code actually is.

The FUTURE

Finally, while Artificial Intelligence can certainly enhance a player’s overall experience by providing challenging opponents who act realistically during combat scenarios; It can gradually dissipate the entire human experience, imagine a scenario where 60% of players use bots……..

….I can assure you that the remaining 40% will battle out of frustration and out of that 40%, 30% will wish they had a bot and only 10% will battle for human experience which is not exactly a good thing.

However, if all the players use bots, then it’ll become a matter of whose bot is better. There needs to be a middle ground. This is the future I see with Web 3 gaming and AI, a future where every gamer has equal access to an AI assistant within every game, is open source and can be modified to the gamers discretion by learning and adapting the owners tactics into the gameplays.

Also, there could be inbuilt humans only section in perhaps every web 3 game where there will be checks to ensure bots are unable to participate. On Splinterlands, this is done in Tournaments, it is safe to say that Tournaments are usually manually played, more on that later.

In the case of Splinterlands, am I using bots? No, will I use bots if I could? Yes. Will it ruin my human experience?, yes,(update No it wouldn’t) because I get frustrated easily by playing manually against bots so why not bot it up if I could, although, there maybe instances where I wouldn’t use a bot even if I could, a typical example is if I want to go on a challenge with my friend, it’ll totally be manual. The important thing is that I have a choice.

What do you think?

AI gaming is something I've not explored yet but this your post has given me a hint on what is going on in the field. It's a fact that, AI is changing the world in positive ways but we seem to be misusing AI bots in so many ways.

Hmmmn yeah, you know what they say, a tool is a tool, it depends on who’s using it.

I am in support of this idea, a section for bots and for humans so the frustration of human playing against bots is eliminated.

Are you in support of banning bot completely from Splinterlands?

No I’m not in support, bots are needed in the game.

A.I. is going to fuck up some things really badly. Would have not imagined A.I. playing Splinterlands. Isn't it just some NFT card collection game, or do you get to fight anything? Just asking...

lol yeah you fight other players with your cards, that’s why the game is so cool

That sounds like something I would do or like to do too

Boss!! I like the fact that you stated that choices can be made if you want to use bots or normal human intelligence!! What I feel is if it’s for earning , people will like to use bots but for more intelligence and a normal gamer experience, just play without using bots or Al !! My question is for a game like chess on the P C , was it something like bots or Al that is used to play against human?? I really don’t know much about splinterland game play!!

Exactly! You get it.

There are instances where humans play Chess with AI, this topic is very popular among chess players

The truth is that, AI can always get better over time and experience.

For Splinterlands, players play against other players, but some players also use AI bots to play.

Wow!! I figured because I have always thought about what gives back the move when playing chess with the Computer. But does it indicate in splinterland when someone is using Al??

It doesn’t indicate, infact, it’s hard to differentiate a bot from a human player, it’s just that you may stand a better chance at winning a human player over a bot especially if you and the human player are of the same level

I get it bro !! Not having indications feels like using a cheat though!!

By the way bro I’m making a portrait for you , so I’ll message on how to get it and how you send a token bro 🙌🏿! Got the picture on here

Tough questions, I don’t have the answers to. Some say without bots it would be hard to find people to play 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I am not sure. The game leveling mechanic definitely incentives you to play everyday and penalizes you heavily for skipping a week or two for job or travel. So humans are incentivized to play, but the play to earn aspect incentivizes bot play, so there’s that…

I am not knowledgeable enough about Splinterlands to choose an answer. I leave that to OGs like you.
