Tech Giants on the Battle for Free Speech

The Problem

If you thought the battle for freedom of speech on Twitter has been won through Elon Musk’s advocacy for free speech and his desire to restore banned Twitter accounts, then you thought wrong because this battle has just started. As we can see from the above tweet, Apple has threatened to withhold Twitter from App Store.

On the first look, it seems to me that the powers that be are so threatened by free speech and the fact that Twitter is no longer under their control with the way Elon has decided to handle the platform. Social media is a very powerful tool, many people saw numerous exhibits revealing the push of political agendas and election rigging in America through Facebook few years ago.

We also saw many exhibits revealing truths related to the Covid pandemic and the vaccinations that came with it on Twitter, but those accounts were suspended almost immediately and all the information buried, but with Twitter under a new management, those strings are hard to pull. So if they can’t control Twitter, then they will control access to it. This is how I see it.

Enter Hive

But there’s nothing new here, it just goes on to show who is in bed with the powers that be. Reliance on centralized big tech corps has always been a weakness especially when it comes to matters relating to control, this is why Hive is not reliant on any platform for its existence, Hive operates as long as there’s internet. If Twitter wants to stand a chance at being truly censorship resistant, this is the only way it can go.

The real pressing questions are, how much pressure is Elon willing to take? How long before Elon catches a government dart and succumbs? This entire thing is too much for one person to handle irrespective of the persons wealth status, the world needs a public platform for disseminating information which Twitter has served to be for a while, however, censorship resistance on centralized platforms are a pipe dream.

The Solution

Integrate Hive into Twitter? That would have been too easy, if it were possible. Integrate Twitter into Hive? Nope, technically not possible also, Twitter and Hive are nothing alike, its like comparing a Horse to a Ferrari, Twitter is bound by the systemic restrictions of Web 2, whereas Hive exists on the helms of unlimited possibilities of Web 3.

Hive is the only true solution to offering a censorship resistant social media platform based on several unique factors like its model of governance and ownership, zero VC’s, model of token distribution and others. The only way Twitter can have any sort of integration into Hive is when people transition into it.

Yup, the way people transitioned from Web 1 to Web 2 is the same way they’ll transition from Twitter into Hive, Twitter will exist as an onboarding tool for Hive as each Twitter account decides to open for themselves something that is censorship resistant and participate in the free speech revolution either by following the steps of their favorite creators that found their ways to Hive or by self discovery or curiosity.

This is how I see it. If Apple goes ahead to withhold Twitter from AppStore, it’ll be an interesting turn of events, I’m curious to see what Elon will do about it.

I don't really believe that Elon would combine Hive with Twitter because he wants control and profits. However, I do support his efforts because we need competition to push back on all the stuff Apple/Google/big companies are doing.

Let’s just imagine for a second that he’s been super philanthropist and isn’t even expecting profit.

However, I do support his efforts because we need competition to push back on all the stuff Apple/Google/big companies are doing.

I totally agree, the entire show is actually quite interesting to watch.

I think it has less to do with free speech and more to do with the way Elon was enabling fraud through the blue check mark scandal.

This is certainly another way to see it.

Apple doesn't block the hive keychain app which lets us make our own free speech on HIVE, that's a pretty good start. If Apple hated free speech then why let HIVE keychain in at all?

Maybe because Hive keychain is just a wallet holder, perhaps if hive.blog was an App, 🤷‍♂️

Honestly, I doubt Apple will block Twitter, as for now, the app is still there so until Apple actually does it, it's all hearsay!
