They say this is a land of thieves.
And yet, even thieves are not guaranteed safety here.
On the Dhaka–Mawa Expressway, a driver stopped his vehicle at a petrol pump, telling his passengers he needed ten minutes to use the washroom.
That was reasonable.
Inside, the four passengers complained about the heat and requested that he leave the air-conditioner on.
Also reasonable.
The driver left the engine running, the AC on, and absent-mindedly took the key out.
That, too, can happen.
When he returned ten minutes later, the vehicle was gone.
Gone—as things often go missing here.
Moments later, it was found overturned near the Sholo Ghar passenger shed. Three of the four passengers had died instantly.
Deaths that, tragically, “could happen.”
The sole survivor was taken to hospital. But he fled.
