CRYPTO COMMUNITIES AND DECENTRALISED SOCIAL PLATFORMS

in LeoFinance4 years ago

Today, I was in an NFT community discord server vibing with fellow community members. We were to engage in a poker game (like we used to) to pass time. However, one of the moderators mentioned that servers have been shut down for playing poker or anything related to gambling.

By the way, Discord updated their terms and conditions yesterday. Usually I don't go through the document to find out what these changes are and I guess I am not the only one guilty of such behaviour. However, yesterday I was curious enough to read a summary of the changes and I stumbled upon something interesting:

Now Discord is taking the pain to go beyond the boundaries on their platform to track user's activities. We know these things go, they end up deplatforming people without prior notice based on vague guidelines like the one mentioned. To be honest, I do not fault them. It is their platform and they can do as they see fit. The question is: will users accept these terms or not. Often then not they will.

I do find it strange how these centralized platforms always start up very friendly and inclusive to capture a large user base only to later come up with very stringent laws that mitigate free speech. It is misleading and I do wonder when people will begin to realise that these platforms do not prioritise their interest.

Why are decentralized communities building on centralised platforms? It doesn't make any sense to me. I am not one of the people who take to Twitter to cry about censorship or being deplatfromed. I consider it to be pointless. Decentralised platforms exist, so why build your community on these centralised platforms that can (at will) deplatform you and your community?

The excuse is always that decentralised social platforms are not as refined as these centralised platforms. Also, there is a larger crowd to reach in centralised platforms. I agree. However, I think the goal is to move people away from centralised platforms, or atleast explore both (decentralised and centralised platforms).

Now a lot of people are talking about the metaverse and web 3 but I do not see any real effort to embrace these platforms. This is because the supposed pioneers of web 3 do not care about the ethos of decentralisation. They only care about their pockets.

Decentralised social platforms are as good as centralised social platforms with added advantages--you own your platform. This entails having full control of your platform. You can build without the fear of being deplatformed, incentivize your community and many other things that are difficult to achieve on centralized platforms.

Crypto communities should build on decentralised social platforms like hive. This will fast track the development of the crypto industry. Centralised platforms will not reform to suit the needs of the crypto community. No amount of outrage will change this fact. The sooner we realise this the better.
