Thank you for the history lesson. It really puts a lot of things in perspective. While I do agree that the Hive financial network is currently outside the government, if it gets big and important enough, the government will still find ways to control it. They can try to restrict access, or they can also buy up a lot of Hive similar to what they did to BTC.

The difference is that Hive can be forked, BTC cannot not. While it is possible for fork the network, with Bitcoin it becomes a cheap replica.
With Hive, the base layer doesnt matter outside the code. Instead we are dealing with something else.
