This Day In Crypto History @ 23 February - The Simpsons Meet Frinkcoin & Coinbase Meets the IRS

in LeoFinance3 years ago

Oh what a day !

The crypto markets are taking a beating with Bitcoin leading the way down to $48K. That's around $10K down in just a few days. Not sure if that is a record but I don't want to go looking on that one.

Never fear, 23 February brings us some crypto history cheer with The Simpson's 'Frinkcoin' episode featuring Jim Parsons aka Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper.

Our other 23rd find is perhaps not so appealing with Coinbase handing over 13,000 customer records to the IRS. Caveat Emptor...

23 February 2020 - The Simpsons Go Crypto with Frinkcoin

In the 13th episode of the 31st season of the iconic American animated sitcom 'The Simpsons' Lisa choses Professor Frink for her 'Most interesting person I know' school paper.

Whilst interviewing the Professor at Springfield University Lisa learns that he is developing a new cryptocurrency called 'Frinkcoin'.

Big Bang Theory's Sheldon Cooper (actor Jim Parsons) pops up in a cameo to explain blockchain and cryptocurrency theory.

The Ripple community picked up on a few potential signals and signposts in the episode to claim that it was their XRP coin being featured...

This was not the first reference to cryptocurrencies on The Simpsons.

Bitcoin had featured twice before in episodes in 2016 and crypto was also included in a Simpsons video game in 2018.

23 February 2018 - Coinbase Hands 13,000 Records to the IRS

At the request of the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Coinbase notified 13,000 of its customers that they would be providing their taxpayer ID, name, birth date, address and historical transaction records (2013-15) to the tax authorities.

This represented only a small segment of Coinbase's 13 million total users, and was considerably less than the initial number requested.

The IRS had originally demanded the records of over 500,000 of Coinbase's customers, but this was reduced by court order in November 2017 to around 14,000.

It was not revealed what the threshold was for being included in the 13,000, but a figure of $20,000 had been mentioned previously.

The IRS wanted the information to help them track down people who had failed to report income earned through cryptocurrency trading.

Help the Project and earn HIVE

If you would like to help this Crypto History project I am always looking for contributions from the community.

I pay 1 HIVE for every suitable verifiable event that I use in a future 'This Day In Crypto History' post.

Super researcher @johnspalding has come to the rescue again with great finds for 26 February.

There is only the 29th left for February now - then we are on to March...

  • March 2nd, 4th, 5th & 7th

If anyone does find an event for 29 February I will 4x the reward to 4 HIVE.

Events will have to be notable enough, with links to reputable websites for verification. Events can be posted in comments below or sent to me on Discord (Pennsif#9921).

The blockchain seas are looking very choppy today.

But hold on tight and don't throw your cryptos overboard.

Dry land will be sighted soon.

Thank you

Slim pickings for the 29th, maybe because it only exists on leap year. When are you going to post for ther 29th since this isn't leap year?

Thanks for these John - I will use them in 3 years - unless I squeeze a special midnight one for 29th.

I will use the second two - first one is a bit more abstract.

On to March now...
