Es un tema rudo que no deja de estar entre las conversaciones de cada hogar. Siempre se trae a colación. Entre amigos, en las colas del supermercado, en la farmacia, en fin...!
Aproximadamente para el año 2014, se comenzó a notar el incremento fuerte de los precios de artículos de primera necesidad, que fue aumentando mes a mes. Ya para el 2020, Venezuela entró en este fenómeno llamado hiperinflación, cuando el país entró en una crisis severa y su flujo de caja, se vio terriblemente afectado; la caída del precio del petróleo trajo como consecuencia el desplome de las importaciones, un hecho que arrojó como resultado la escasez de alimentos básicos y medicinas.
La mala administración de Maduro respondió al aumento de la inflación con más emisión de billetes, que para nadie es un secreto que el precio del papel moneda, es más costoso que el propio valor real del billete. Además creó una Ley mal llamada "control de precios justos", que fue una burla para el pueblo, porque llegaban los militares a cerrar las puertas de los negocios que tuviesen precios por encima de lo estipulado en dicha ley y procedían a bajar los precios a la fuerza, lo que ocasionaba la bancarrota de muchos negocios. Ellos pretendían bajar el costo de un artículo cuyo precio era, por citar un ejemplo, de diez millones de bolívares fuertes, a dos millones, cuando el dueño del negocio, lo había adquirido en 5 millones.
¿Cuál es la parte más difícil de vivir en hiperinflación?
Yo creo que acá hay un común denominador. A todos nos ha generado ansiedad, angustia, desesperación. Claro que a algunos más que a otros, esta grave crisis nos ha golpeado de distintas maneras. Pero es muy duro ver personas que antes tenían un empleo, ahora se han quedado sin ese ingreso porque o bien la empresa para la que trabajaban, ha cerrado sus puertas o han tenido que recortar el presupuesto y eso conlleva al automático despido masivo, quedándose solo con empleados que ellos consideran claves para la compañía.
Estas personas las ves por todas partes, hurgando en la basura, pidiendo dinero en los semáforos, en la entrada del metro, en las colas de los autobuses, tocando tu puerta a ver qué pueden conseguir, para al final del día, llevar un plato de comida a sus hambrientos hijos.
Pero hay algo que llama poderosamente la atención y es que muchos de los que piden dinero, quieren dólares. Yo les he ofrecido comida, porque es con lo que puedo contribuir, pero he tenido la fea experiencia de que algunos se han molestado conmigo.
Hubo un caso particular con un señor (el de la foto de portada) que mientras yo estaba en la cola de carros para surtir gasolina, se acercaba a los carros a pedir dinero, porque tenía hambre. Yo no cuento con dinero en efectivo, porque hasta los bolívares son difíciles de conseguir. Entonces le ofrecí comprarle algo en la farmacia. Podría ser unas galletas, un paquete de arroz, leche, harina. Lo que el señor prefiriese. Per el señor con total descaro, me dijo que eso no le servía y que mejor le diera "aunque fuese" diez dólares y así, él compraría lo que le apeteciese 😒
Esto nos demuestra lo enferma que está la sociedad en muchos sentidos. Lamentablemente, muchos no son agradecidos y cuando piden, son exigentes y si no los ayudas como ellos quieren, se molestan y te insultan. Eso es lo mismo que pedir un favor, mientras apuntas con un arma.
¿Qué has aprendido con esta situación?
He aprendido a ser agradecida. Antes no me daba cuenta de la bendición que representa tener un techo propio sobre nuestras cabezas, una cama dónde dormir, nuestras tres comidas y un carro para trasladarnos. Era algo que daba por hecho y jamás me detuve a pensar en ello, hasta que comenzó todo esto de la pandemia, que nos obligó a mantenernos en nuestras casas, a recortar el presupuesto y a sobrevivir de la mejor manera que cada quien encontrara.
He aprendido además a ser paciente, a esperar, mientras continúo trabajando para darle de comer a mi hijo. Me he convertido además en maestra y en artesana, en recicladora y he aprendido a ver mis fortalezas y mis debilidades.
Como decía mi papá: "todo lo malo, siempre trae algo bueno."
¿Cuál fue el detonante de la hiperinflación en tu país?
El detonante para mi, ha sido un espiral descendiente.
El primer error fue aquel fallecido presidente Rafael Caldera, cuando liberó de la cárcel al golpista Hugo Chávez Frías. Posteriormente, mucha gente ciega, se dejó llevar por las promesas de un golpista, de una vida "mejor". Llegó con un sinfín de propuestas económicas que a simple vista, parecían muy buenas, porque ofreció desde la reducción de impuestos, hasta viviendas gratuitas para la clase baja, bonos y una cantidad de cosas que para ellos, representaba el paraíso terrenal, porque simplemente no ven más allá de sus narices.
Como dice el proverbio chino:
“Regala un pescado a un hombre y le darás alimento para un día, enséñale a pescar y lo alimentarás para el resto de su vida”.
En nuestro país la gente se acostumbró a que le regalaran, a no trabajar. Para mi, todo esto, desencadenó la flojera de los más pobres, la viveza criolla y por consiguiente, la delincuencia galopante.
El común denominador de la sociedad venezolana, se acostumbró a esperar un bono, a que le den por bajo costo, una bolsa de comida que no cubre las reglas mínimas de sanidad. En pocas palabras, se acostumbró a que le regalaran las cosas y a no ganarse la vida por mutis propio.
Una de las leyes que están aprobadas por el dictador Nicolás Maduro, es la expropiación de las viviendas desocupadas. Por ejemplo, una familia que se marchó del país buscando ese futuro que aquí no les fue posible conseguir y tuvieron que dejar sus casas solas. El gobierno venezolano dijo que vivienda que esté desocupada, vivienda que será otorgada a personas que no tengan casa.
¿Esto como se llama? Es decir, no vale el esfuerzo, ni el sacrificio que esa familia tuvo que pasar para poder tener su casa y que por razones de fuerza mayor, tuvieron que cerrar por un tiempo. Si no están siendo ocupadas, el gobierno las robará para dársela a otros.
¿Qué consejo le darías a un extranjero que va a comenzar a vivir una hiperinflación en su país?
Yo lo que podría aconsejarles a estas personas es que traten de invertir, de tener bienes inmuebles que se devalúan poco. Que investiguen en el mundo de las Criptomonedas e inviertan en las más estables y conocidas. Creo que la inversión en Criptos, es la más segura de las inversiones. Y por encima de todo, les aconsejaría que sean fuertes por su familia, porque no es nada fácil vivir en hiperinflación. Y si van a emigrar, que sea a un país donde la economía es estable, como Finlandia, Suiza, Australia, en donde el fenómeno socialista no ha causado estragos.

He also created a law wrongly called "fair price control", which was a mockery for the people, because the military came to close the doors of the businesses that had prices above the stipulated in said law and proceeded to lower the prices by force, which caused the bankruptcy of many businesses. What is the hardest part of living in hyperinflation?
I think there is a common denominator here. It has generated anxiety, anguish, despair for all of us. Of course, some of us more than others, this serious crisis has hit us in different ways. But it is very hard to see people who used to have a job, now they have been left without that income because either the company they worked for has closed its doors or they have had to cut the budget and that leads to the automatic massive layoff, leaving only employees that they consider key for the company.
You see these people everywhere, rummaging through garbage, asking for money at traffic lights, at the entrance of the subway, in bus lines, knocking on your door to see what they can get, to at the end of the day, bring a plate of food to their hungry children.
But there is one thing that is striking, and that is that many of those who ask for money want dollars. I have offered them food, because that is what I can contribute, but I have had the unpleasant experience that some have become annoyed with me.
There was a particular case with a man (the one in the cover photo) who, while I was in line for gas, approached the cars to ask for money, because he was hungry. I don't have cash, because even bolivars are hard to come by. So I offered to buy him something at the pharmacy. It could be some cookies, a package of rice, milk, flour. Whatever he preferred. But the gentleman, with total impudence, told me that he had no use for that and that I should give him "even if it was" ten dollars and then he would buy whatever he wanted 😒 😒.
This shows us how sick society is in many ways. Sadly, many are not grateful and when they ask, they are demanding and if you don't help them the way they want, they get upset and insult you. That's the same as asking for a favor, while pointing a gun.
What have you learned from this situation?
I have learned to be grateful. Before, I didn't realize what a blessing it is to have a roof over our heads, a bed to sleep in, our three meals and a car to get around in. It was something I took for granted and never stopped to think about it, until this whole pandemic started, which forced us to stay in our homes, to cut back on our budget and to survive the best way we could find.
I have also learned to be patient, to wait, while continuing to work to feed my son. I have also become a teacher and an artisan, a recycler, and I have learned to see my strengths and weaknesses.
As my dad used to say: "everything bad always brings something good".
What was the trigger for hyperinflation in your country?
The trigger for me, has been a downward spiral.
The first mistake was that late President Rafael Caldera, when he released from jail the coup leader Hugo Chavez Frias. Subsequently, many blind people were carried away by the promises of a coup leader, of a "better" life. He came with an endless number of economic proposals that at first sight, seemed very good, because he offered from tax reductions, to free housing for the lower class, bonuses and a number of things that for them, represented an earthly paradise, because they simply do not see beyond their noses.
As the Chinese proverb says:
**"Give a man a fish and you will give him food for a day, teach him to fish and you will feed him for the rest of his life."****
In our country people got used to being given gifts, to not working. For me, all this, triggered the laziness of the poorest, the Creole liveliness and consequently, the rampant delinquency.
The common denominator of Venezuelan society has become accustomed to waiting for a bonus, to being given a bag of food that does not cover the minimum sanitation standards for a low cost. In a few words, they got used to being given things as gifts and to not earning a living by their own efforts.
One of the laws that have been approved by the dictator Nicolás Maduro is the expropriation of unoccupied houses. For example, a family that left the country looking for a future that they could not get here and had to leave their homes alone. The Venezuelan government said that housing that is unoccupied, housing that will be granted to people who do not have a home.
What is this called? That is to say, it is not worth the effort, nor the sacrifice that this family had to go through to be able to have their house and that for reasons of force majeure, they had to close for a while. If they are not being occupied, the government will steal them to give them to others.
What advice would you give to a foreigner who is about to start living a hyperinflation in his country?
What I could advise these people is to try to invest, to have real estate that devalues little. That they research in the world of Cryptocurrencies and invest in the most stable and well known ones. I believe that investment in Cryptos is the safest investment. And above all, I would advise them to be strong for their family, because it is not easy to live in hyperinflation. And if you are going to emigrate, let it be to a country where the economy is stable, like Finland, Switzerland, Australia, where the socialist phenomenon has not wreaked havoc.
