I think most do this these days - but isn't thinking a process or skill that can be improved with practice? If only using it when needed, is it as effective?

It is not effective at all. I spent twice as much time in processing the information and coming up with right ideas to project. That's why I agree with you that we need to get rid of the information overload and allow ourselves to get bored. That way, we are offloading junk from our brain.
I think we need to practice in focusing on things that really matter to us which will ultimately hone our skill.

Yep - I see boredom as some kind of cleansing process - a meditation of sorts.
