The most surprising thing may have been seeing militarized police or other groups patrolling around sitting in the back of a pick up truck wielding their machine guns. The first few times were a bit shocking, but then you get used to it.
For the cost, well that's tricky. Lodging varies so much in prices. As for food we kept to street food making our own and going to the restaurants.
