The sugar maple leaf is an emblem and the national symbol of the modern nation of Canada. This sugar maple leaf design was adapted from the first design created in 1979 by Walter Ott for the gold version of the Canadian Maple Leaf.
In 1988, the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coin was the first .9999 pure silver bullion coin offered in the market and in 2014 was among the first bullion coin programs to feature security measures in the design to combat counterfeiting.

The obverse side of 2020 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coins features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fourth-generation portrait of Her Majesty and was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt. This design is the first of the Queen to not feature a crown on the monarchs head and is also the first design to do so since early in the reign of her father, King George VI.
