The Spanish warships were still outgunned, the San Jose's Captain ordered the the remaining ships to continue on while his flagship turn to engage the English squadron to distract and lure their pursuers away.
My theory is that the Spanish Captain scuttled the San Jose to deny the British the huge plunder and preserve his honor.
