Afterburn (2025) - REVIEW
Afterburn came out and its basically another forgettable action movie 💥 where Dave Bautista punches his way through a post apocalyptic world that looks like a cheaper version of Mad Max, a solar flare wiped out half the planet so borders dont exist anymore and now Jake played by Bautista has to steal the Mona Lisa for Samuel L Jackson who somehow became the King of England. Director JJ Perry worked as a stunt coordinator on John Wick so the action scenes are decent, theres blood when people get stabbed or shot 🩸 but scenes that should have tension just fall flat, Perry knows stunts but still needs way more practice as a director

The train fight at the end is probably the best part where Jake fights through different cars taking out soldiers, doing what Bautista the wrestler does best although he is not that big anymore 💪 dont know why so many actors are falling into these wild transformations. The ending tries to be happy where Jake gets his boat and sails off with Drea but it feels empty because we spent two hours with these people and dont know much about them. Afterburn is not the worst action movie this year but its not good either, its one you watch on a lazy day when theres nothing else, I give it a 6 out of 10

The biggest problem is nothing feels like it matters, the world building is lazy too because they say half the planet got destroyed but then you see people drinking cold beers at the end in a bar with electricity 🍺 and Im thinking where did those beers come from, did someone find a warehouse full of beer six years after everything went to shit. The logic falls apart if you think about it, like there is this part where Jake swims through a flooded tunnel about to drown but then he just breaks a gate with his last bit of strength, why didnt he try that earlier

Olga Kurylenko plays Drea and shes way better than Bautista in almost every scene, wish she had more to do 😤 because most of the time she is just driving or shooting at stuff. The movie tries to set up romance between them but there is zero chemistry, they had this scene where they talk by a fire about paper boats and then suddenly at the end theyre in love sailing away together. It feels rushed like the writer checked a box on a list, we needed more time with these two together to believe they care about each other, Jake dont have any real backstory except he wants a boat

The plot twist is that the Mona Lisa isnt actually a painting, its a nuclear bomb with the Mona Lisa painted on it 🎨 and the movie never explains why August wants this third atomic bomb from World War Two. Bautista does his thing punching people and trying to be funny but it feels forced, this is not Drax from Guardians where he had a great cast and script to work with, instead he is alone and the script doesnt do him any favors. His delivery is flat most of the time, jokes dont land and serious moments feel wooden, he is just not the type of actor that can carry a meh script on his shoulders
