The Nun (2018): Jump Scares and Wasted Potential - REVIEW
The Nun from 2018 is basically jump scare city with not much else going for it 😬, watched the whole Conjuring franchise chronologically and this prequel just does not hit like the original movies do, takes place in 1952 Romania at this creepy monastery where a nun kills herself and the Vatican sends Father Burke and Sister Irene to investigate. Sounds cool on paper but it falls apart quick, biggest issue is the formula gets old fast 👻, quiet hallway then BAM something jumps out and after the fifth or sixth time you see it coming from a mile away, when scary becomes predictable its game over

The ending tries to tie into the first Conjuring by revealing Frenchie is the guy Ed and Lorraine Warren exorcised later, supposed to be this oh damn moment but it doesnt really land 🎬, Valak looked creepy as hell with great makeup but good visuals cant save weak script and pacing. By the end it felt more like an action movie than horror with everyone running around fighting the demon, maybe a 7 out of 10 cause Im bias for the franchise but I get why people online destroyed it, easily the weakest Conjuring entry with tons of wasted potential

Father Burke gets buried alive in a coffin early on and you think okay now they gonna bounce out of there right, but no he just keeps walking into dark rooms by himself like that wasnt warning enough 💀, dude also has these visions of a kid he failed to exorcise years ago spitting snakes at him but it never goes anywhere interesting. Sister Irene ends up being the actual hero, she figures out the Mary statue clue and defeats Valak by spitting Christ blood in the demons face while getting choked underwater 😂, like how did Valak not notice her doing all that, felt super convenient

The visuals are actually pretty sick, gothic cemetery with crosses and fog everywhere 🌫️, the monastery looks like something from an old monster movie so that part works. Problem is once the scares start its just the same shit over and over, someone with a candle walking down a dark hall then loud noise and the demon nun face pops out, when you start seeing the pattern it stops being scary and just becomes background noise, the non scary investigation parts kept me more interested than the actual horror stuff which is not a good sign 😅

Taissa Farmiga does what she can as Sister Irene and yeah she looks exactly like Vera Farmiga which makes sense for the franchise connection, but good casting cant save boring characters you just dont care about 🤷, the one guy worth watching is Frenchie who becomes way more important later, he commits to his part and actually makes you give a damn. Father Burke though, total waste, you think this Vatican investigator is gonna be some badass exorcist type 💀 but nope he just walks into danger and gets wrecked every time
