I have used Linux (currently Ubuntu Studio) on my home PC for about 15 years and it serves me well. I am not really a gamer, but have run some Steam stuff on it. I got fed up with Windows trying to stop me doing things. I have not tried the really lightweight distros, but I am sure there are a few for use on basic hardware. It is a while since I had to do a fresh install, but generally that is pretty painless and the updates just work. Mind you, the latest one has broken my ability to record video. I need to look into that.
Most people will have various Linux devices around the home including smart TVs, Android devices and anything else with a processor in it. Linux is everywhere, but mostly invisible.
