People often oversee comments but I agree, that's where connections are being made. Especially on threads, where it's even easier to engage with others imo.

I think you are correct, some authors may skip comments, while others focus on them.
I think most check the comments on their own posts but stop there. As you threaded as well, peopld should have a look at others their posts and engage with meaningful comments, not just 'nice'
