A Number's Game

in LeoFinancelast year

Isidore of Seville said take numbers away from all things and all things will perish. Numbers are the closest thing we have of truth in the physical universe, the code or blueprint of created things.

That's why Galileo said no one will be able to read the great book of the Universe if he/she doesn't understand its language, which is that of mathematics.

Since reading is a potent ability in that it enables us to understand how to do things, we could, by extension, say that the person wouldn't also be able to do much. I mean, it's obvious that an illiterate in medicine will not be able to heal anyone.

To many, numbers may just be numbers. But to me, numbers are fascinating, coherently consistent and full of mystery. Interestingly, however, I failed maths most of my school days, this fascination for numbers came alive after my school days.

If numbers are the foundation of all things, could it be the foundation we're missing in our pursuits of making some of our dreams a reality? The bridge or key puzzle that's needed to make some dreams a reality?

Before diving into an answer, let's first look at the main obstacle in reaching that foundation, vagueness.

Avoid Vagueness!

Perhaps, Isidore of Seville didn't literally mean that all things will perish. It could be that taking away numbers from things will bring about a lack of structure. They become out of shape, without form or clarity, vague and obscure.

There's a particularly awakening effect with numbers in that they dispel all illusions. We find it echoed in the saying numbers don't lie. And rightly so! If the numbers aren't manipulated, we'll find the undeniable truth right in front of us.

You can trick yourself into believing that you're making a profit month after month but when the quarterly report comes out and shows negative net profit, the charm of tricking yourself falls flat in the face of truth.

It's a similar thing more or less when you're working on losing weight, you're shocked awake from the subjective perception of believing you're losing weight when you stand on the weighing machine and realise that you haven't lose more than a pound all these months.

But we somehow enjoy tricking ourselves, becoming comfortable with vagueness because a visit into the objective truth of numbers can shine light on our shortcomings or lack of effort on our part.

When it comes to pursuits, having the desire is a key part but it is barely enough in moving the needle forward. It needs to be backed by practical actions and that's where numbers come in.

Into The World Of Numbers

Suppose, you want to achieve this much desired goal of passive income. To have this characteristic of the wealthy which is making money while you're asleep.

Taking an overview, you'll realise that you need to have investments that pay out an income, preferably monthly. This can be achieved through owning an asset(s) that have this capability (e.g traditionally, a business, real estate, dividend paying stocks, etc).

Going further down and with the help of numbers, you decided that you want $100 as passive income per month. The principal needed to achieve $100 in passive income through dividend paying stocks or real estate can be a lot! However, there's one which is not and it's relatable to most of you reading this, HBD savings.

With it's current 20% APR, you only need around $6,000 in principal. Now, starting from scratch, this might also seem a lot. But there is another option which came to me while writing this post.

When Hive coin climbs back to $3, you'll only need 2000 Hive converted to HBD to achieve $100 per month passive income. If it doubles to $6, you'll need around 1000 Hive.

With only the overview, it's a matter of if passive income is achieved. With the help of numbers and going further down, it moves from if to when passive income is achieved.

That's how powerful numbers can be, they bring clarity and put things into perspective. It becomes a number's game on when $100 passive income a month will be reached.

In Conclusion

Going back to the question on the intro, an answer will be a resounding yes. It is the lacking foundation that's preventing us from zeroing in on the gap between our dreams and reality.

However, it is not so if the dream isn't practical enough. If I see this beautiful lady that's way out of my league and dream that she takes an interest in me, it is not a number's game to make that a reality. Unless, she's a maths freak...

The Hive Gamification Proposal

Numbers are powerful, they have the ultimate power to change things especially zero. It is one crazy bitch.

Lol, absolutely! Misplacing just one can make everything go crazy.

Yeah. It is quite insane

Well, I'm not a math genius but as a research data analyst, in the process of choosing the research methodology Which is either qualitative or quantitative, you will realise the numbers game is only applicable to event and situations that can be weighed statistically. Yeah numbers might give us a practical break down and end result of a particular investment or dreams but there will still be some variables missing when applying such mathematical methods to reality.

Some things just happens even if you have it all calculated and figured out with numbers.

Interesting insights. I also think the missing variables will make the equation incomplete and the desired outcome will not be achieved. However, in the case that they're present, the numbers game could be the only missing part in achieving tangible results.

Indeed. That's also happens.

Although I have never liked numbers, I know that they are essential in life to solve any problem, mathematics is used.

Yes, they. I didn't like them too until recently. They seem confusing and hard to understand but yes, they can be an essential part of life.

Your articles are so 'clean' and very factual. It is always a pleasure to read them:)

Thanks for the kind remarks!
I'm glad to hear that :)

This is such a brilliant piece. Just like you, I wasn't a mathematics lover while in highschool. But I later realize the importance of numbers in life, and I'm doing everything to catch up.

It could be that mathematics back in school days was just so boring. The whole textbook was like reading a foreign language to me. Numbers are indeed an important aspect of life. Best of luck in catching up ;)

You're welcome.

I love numbers. And at one time, I wanted to teach math as a vocation. My favorite saying is: you can never get away from math, it’s everywhere.

Then it's mutual lol. I thought teaching maths would help me understand the subject better but I never got myself to do it. I learned through consuming books and practical lectures found on the Internet. Numbers are indeed everywhere.
