Cryptocurrency: The Answer To A Military Coup

in LeoFinance2 years ago

Cryptocurrency is showing up everywhere. When we discuss how this is going to change the world through the different use cases, we are not exaggerating. Things are happening so fast.

Raise your hand if you had "circumventing military coup" in the future user case of cryptocurrency pool?

Obviously this is not something that most think about. However, what it exemplifies is the fact that cryptocurrency is capable of circumventing tyranny, no matter what form it takes. One of the easiest ways to oppress people is to cut them off financially.

Thanks to the vision of Satoshi, among others, we see how this is no longer the case. Cryptocurrency exists in many different forms. With more than 10,000 of them, people have many ways to transfer value. This is essential for ongoing economic and financial operations.

Myanmar Made USDT Legal Tender

There is a rather confusing situation in Myanmar. Who is the legitimate government versus who is not depends upon one's point of view. Nevertheless, this is a very interesting development, one that could replicate itself throughout the world if oppression keeps ramping up.

The exiled government of Myanmar has now declared that USDT is the legal tender of the country and urges all its citizens to use that currency. This comes after the military arm of the country arrested a number of people for their transactions in the supporting the resistance.

Basically, the National Unity Government is a pro-democracy government that was recognized by the European Union. That said, they presently hold no power. That did not stop it from issuing a statement on Facebook declaring the USDT as legal tender for its nation. The shadow government is in favor of utilizing cryptocurrency at least.

“The military regime controls the central bank,” the NUG’s statement said, further clarifying that the main reason behind Tether’s incorporation was “to improve and accelerate the current trading and financial services.”

Source

This should surprise nobody. Missing from the statement is how central banks like to think they control the currency. Here is a case in point where the reality can be different from what the illusion is. Nevertheless, opting to quickly go around what is taking place is always a pathway away from the oppression.

Here is an outstanding example of how cryptocurrency solves a major problem. This use case of combating oppression was touted from the beginning. The only difference is who is doing the oppression.

Ode To The Hypocrisy

Isn't it interesting how we see a lot of entities discussion how they need to regulate cryptocurrency and the "fact" that stablecoins are a threat to the stability of the economic system. This is ratcheting up yet here we have an entity that is supported by the EU turning to cryptocurrency, something that is utilized by "criminals".

In an era of "one set of rules for me, another set for you", the hypocrisy should not surprise most.

While few know about the situation in Myanmar, it does epitomize why cryptocurrency is needed and how powerful it can be. The fact that we are establishing global networks that nobody controls is vital. We have with Bitcoin and a couple other tokens are moving in this direction. Most have major points of vulnerability yet are still very useful due to their size and how spread out they are. Finally, with so many tokens, even the centralized ones that are under the radar can be useful since it is impossible for the oppressors to target them all.

We can expect more behavior from those in power. They will utilize something when it is to their benefit while condemning it when it is a threat. For that reason, we often discuss simply coding around them. Realizing these people are playing a rigged game means we simply have to start an entirely new one. There is no way to win when they set the rules and change them as the game progresses, naturally to their benefit.

The Focus Upon Stablecoins

Of late, the idea of stablecoins is growing. Jeremy Allaire, the CEO of Circle, stated that he believes the ultimate market for stablecoins is $120 trillion. The target that Circle would like to get to is 10 trillion USDC issued.

Myanmar has a population of over 50 million people. This is about 50% larger than the state of California. That means we are going to have a lot of people exposed, at least in concept, to the idea of cryptocurrency. Time will tell how many of these people actually start transacting in USDT.

The stablecoin market is powerful since it is something people understand. We also have a true transaction unit. Whereas people view most cryptocurrency like stock, preferring to hold due to the potential of appreciation, stablecoins provide people with something they will utilize for payments.

It is a situation that is unlikely to change.

Another topic of discussion over the last couple months is the Hive Backed Dollar (HBD), the stablecoin on Hive. This is an algorithmic based token that is tied to the HIVE token. Since this is decentralized due to its location on blockchain, it can offers the ability to operate outside any oppressive entity.

For this reason, more focus is required to tighten the range of the token as well as providing use cases. In one of the upcoming articles, we will present an idea of how to take the existing concept to another level. For now, we just have to understand how big the market is becoming and how vital it is to provide alternatives, even to the likes of USDC and USDT. After all, who knows what governments will come down on them.

While it is unlikely they will face an armed takeover like in Myanmar, coups from governments take place regularly through the use of laws. Even though they have guns and jails, rarely does it get to that point. Just the threat is enough to force compliance.

Having alternatives outside their reach will reduce the power they have to commit tyranny. It is time for these people to realize that the "sheep" are waking up.

As Myanmar shows, the path from power to sheep can be a quick one.

All should take heed. Those of us in cryptocurrency realize this and are working at building the tools that provide people with alternatives.

This is how we'll do it. One nation at a time adopting crytos as legal tender. I watched an interview with the head of the EZB last week and it was interesting how she got emotional saying that cryptos are not a currency. They are screaming and kicking and hoping that it won't happen. But we can just surpass them by actually start using them and start trading in cryptos. They'll have to block the internet to stop this

What is happening is no different than what took place 70 years ago in the Eurodollar market. People are deciding what money is to them and what they will use.

The top-down approach the Central Bankers had by the 1970s was done since the bankers internationally decided (and created) their own forms of money.

It is now up to us to replicate this process. That means we can make a lot of money going forward.

I agree that mass adoption comes one country at a time, small steps which add up to big steps.

One of the easiest ways to oppress people is to cut them off financially.

The Hungarian government is expert in financial discrimination. Nowadays I am experiencing it every day. I live with multiple disabilities, and I receive a low (approximately $250 USD per month), pension-like income, and nowadays I also work as a packager in a four hours per day part time job, but even if I combine the two, my total income is still approximately only $470 USD per month, while the minimum wage is approximately $550 USD per month.

And many people are in much worse financial situation. And this affects not just/only the disabled people and the pensioner people, but the healthy people too.

And nobody is doing anything against this tyrant, dictatorship-like government. Not even the European Union.

And nobody is doing anything against this tyrant, dictatorship-like government. Not even the European Union.

Why would the EU do anything about it. That is just another form of tyranny.

Just keep earning your cryptocurrency and you will easily surpass the entire system.

The EU is a tyranny? Interesting viewpoint. This is the first time I hear someone describing the EU with this word. But probably you are right. They are idly watching all the injustice going on in this country.

Economic oppression is a real thing, and we have witnessed this to an extent here in Greece. People were not allowed to withdraw their own money from the bank or send it abroad for certain periods during the past decade due to the economic crisis.

Goes to show how your bank money is not exactly your own money, and how crypto is destined to change things for the better.

LUV!

Without a doubt. The Greeks were greatly affected by the actions of those in power. A lot of this came from Brussels (driven by Germany). It is time for the entire country (the population) to embrace cryptocurrency.

It is a way out of the present system.

I am inching ever closer to the HBD goal that I have for myself. I hope to be there by the end of the first quarter next year. That seems like a pretty reasonable goal right now. That is interesting about Myanmar. So the government that the EU recognizes as legit is pushing USDT. It seems like a perfect way to take the power from the military and put it back into the hands of the people.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yes a very interesting situation considering what is taking place. I have no idea how the EU justifies it yet turns around to slap down crypto.

Either way, it doesnt matter. I am glad you are paying more attention to HBD. I hope thousands more follow your lead.

Having alternatives outside their reach will reduce the power they have to commit tyranny. It is time for these people to realize that the "sheep" are waking up.

Which is absolutely true and the people need to wise up

Most will now. It is going to take the few to change things because the masses tend to only follow.

A great news from another country for cryptocurrencies's legitimacy. They won't stop the coming of the spring.

Stablecoin for me is very useful, especially in countries where there's excessive Inflation of their traditional currency. This is why lately a lot of Nigerians have taken to it it to preserve the value of their money.
Of course, we'd keep hearing how crypto can be utilised by criminals for mayhem, it's basically an emotional stance rather then a logical one.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

The USD was used in more criminal activity than any other currency or form of money in history.

So it is a strawman argument.

So it is a strawman argument.

Exactly it is, but it's a bias a lot of people don't notice.

I am wondering whether or not they can control USDT but I guess it might work if there is talks with Tether. However I don't think the US government will take kindly to this because it's similar to how China used dollars for the one belt one road initiative. Although I am wondering if anything will happen this time around.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Tether does have a point of vulnerability since there is a team behind it. Thus it can be attacked to a degree at least.

That said, it will not come from the military in Myanmar.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

You are going to think me so short-sighted. I had no idea that cryptocurrency can fight tyranny. Reading about countries that have devalued currency, and the people turning to cryptocurrency.
This should have been my first clue.
Just recently @blainjones helped me to set up a hive-engine witness server, that process of telling people and asking about votes taught me the real value of having worker bee staked. It is also the only Hive-Engine Witness in Japan.

It is always good to see things spreading out and entering new markets.

That is the key to all of this. Get pieces in every country. Whether it be nodes, servers, or token holders.

It needs to be everywhere.

Alternative tools indeed. I hope they can make HBD stable as last week it was down at 93c and is just bad as if it goes to $1.10.

This is quite informative..thanks for putting this up

I've been following and tweeting about this story closely ever since the military coup in Feb. The Military in Burma (known as the Tatmadaw), has repeatedly overthrown the civillian government ever since independence. They have arrested, tortured and killed even young children in their brutal lust for power.

The leader of the military junta, senior general Min Aung Hlaing, was set for mandatory retirement in July of this year, but instead decided to arrest the lawful government on bogus charges of election fraud. One only has to visit the pages of Myanmar Now or The Irrwaddy to see their brutality in action.

They have shelled villages, and set parts of entire towns ablaze. This past weekend, they burned people alive. These swine have no business being in power at all. They have even attacked members of the clergy who were trying to protect innocent villagers.

They've declared war against their own people...

They are using airstrikes and artillery against peasants who were armed only with homemade muskets and hunting rifles, until the people organized into self-defencs units known as PDF's. The people protested the coup peacefully at first and were unarmed. They only took up arms after being ignored by the international community when they asked for assistance, and as a means to fight back.

I hope their revolution succeeds.

I support the NUG 100% and am proud they are finding ways to back the people using crypto. The military junta must be overthrown, and the legitimate elected leaders including State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi, and President Win Myint must be released and restored to their elected offices.

If crypto can help in their fight for freedom, I'm all for it.
