Hollywood is cooked.
This is something that I started writing about a couple years ago. Those within Hollywood thought that the writers and actors strikes were positive moves. I debated some citing how it was going to backfire on them.
That is exactly what happened.
Today, we have geographical decentralization as Hollywood film lots are empty. Production moved to other states or, even, foreign countries. Many are putting forth incentives to lure the studios there.
It is working.
Of course, this is a long time practice of moving things around geographically. The manufacturing industry saw this for decades. It was the start of the "outsourcing" craze.
There is another issue waiting around the corner, about to further decentralize the movie studios, pulling power away from them.
Hollywood Is An Example of Technological Decentralization
Few can dispute the impact of technology. Unfortunately, for most, it is only in hindsight they realize it.
Over the past two years, Hollywood crashed. The major studios invested billions into streaming, only to find Google became the most popular streaming platform. Then we have the dilution that the industry created, providing hundreds of channels, pulling eyeballs in every direction.
X is reportedly the most popular news platform. The Meta family of applications are home to billions of users each month.
In other words, this is a rapidly changing landscape.
Think about what took place. Only 2 years ago, most thought the Hollywood strikes were simply business as usual. Each side had its supporters. However, the majority did not realize the nail that was being driven into the coffin.
Now the writers union is looking to approach a world with a "smaller iceberg".
YouTube is the dominant video platform. There are other niche ones such as Rumble. The content creators number in the millions. They come from all corners of the planet, providing billions of hours of information or entertainment.
There Was No Hollywood To Shutdown
The Golden Goose is dead.
Hollywood was the epicenter for entertainment. It was actually more than that since it reached a cultural norm. The influence it wielded was enormous.
No more.
Instead, shutting down Hollywood was nothing more than the dagger through the heart. The movie studios were already on thin ice. Certainly, management was greedy believing that streaming was the path to massive profits with little effort. After all, Netflix was cleaning up.
There are channels on YouTube that are dedicated solely to helping people navigate what is going on in the world of cord cutting. This is something that started 15 or so years ago and is only increasing. As more Boomers die off, the idea of a cable subscription is also departing.
Out next wave of technological disruption comes in the form of generative AI. While many are still railing against this, it will become the norm.
In a few years, the amount of AI generated content will likely exceed that of the humans. The numbers are not in favor of the human content creators.
Google will love this, human content creators will not. The latter will end up being niche creators. It is akin to those who paint portraits. That is still done but most family photos are taken by someone on a smartphone (not even using a camera).
There was a time when all family images were physically painted by a human.
If we expand this up the scale, we can see how the masses are out the door. Even the studios will find themselves targeted since they offer nothing special. Over the last 15 years, most of the success they had came from the recycling of traditional franchises.
Thus, we are quickly getting to the point where there is no Hollywood to shutdown.
With the advent of AI agents, the masses will be able to generate content that is acceptable to most. This pushes the creation even further out since only a few becomes many.
What happens to those who are specialized and earn a living off their skills? Like the Luddites, they are no longer needed.
This is going to happen across the board.

I guess we should start producing quality ai content helpful to folks perhaps generate scenes that help folks relax as a kind of therapy
Great view on the media decentralization and AI will simply bring creators to the spotlight that wouldn't have the chance otherwise. Who would have imagined to do movies from his or her couch...? I didn't, but now is possible more than ever.
