Dealing With AI Deepfakes

For the moment, we are okay.

AI is being used to create deepfake videos. These are appearing all over YouTube, with some of the most well known influencers having their images and voices hijacked.

Welcome to the future.

How are people going to combat this? At present, the technology is such that, for the most part, we can tell it is a fake. There was a video I just saw where the hands of the individual moved in the same manner throughout the video.

This was the dead giveaway along with the fact the face looked like it was embalmed 3 months ago.

Unfortunately, that will not always be the case.

So what is the solution? In this article I will take a look.

Dealing With AI Deepfakes

We have to separate this discussion into two groups of people.

Those who are extremely famous will actually have a more difficult time. This is the first category. Our second one are through influencers who have a much smaller following, looking to make some headway in the online world.

It is the latter for which we will focus our attention.

As AI improves, the ability to deepfake will run in parallel. This is going to be a major problem. People are gullible and many still believe the nonsense put out by the mainstream media (including the financial channels) when a bit of research would uncover their lies.

With deepfakes, anyone who is starting to gain traction as a content creator is going to face this issue. There are bot farms cropping up that do nothing more than generate deepfake videos and post them online.

Again, what is an individual to do?

As a smaller influencer, there is an advantage. The ability to prove oneself human is much easier. This is going to be key in the future.

Proof of Humanity

This is not something that I believe an algorithm will solve. Instead, we are going to have to revert back to basic techniques of engagement.

Let us use a musician as an example. The penetration of this industry by AI is being widely covered. AI music is taking off, filling up Sportify and other music applications.

How does a human artist stand out?

The key is going to be proving that one is human. When someone comes across a song, the determining factor of whether it is human or not will come from the proof provided.

Here is where engagement on social media platforms enters. One who is recording music can show images of that taking place. By posting on, say, Instagram, one can prove that he or she is a real human.

Of course, eventually, AI will replicate this. That said, when one takes steps to engage in different ways, across many different platforms, things change. Also, having validation of others who are followed can be helpful.

Another way to achieve this is to do a live stream. Many software applications allow for this. Here is where followers can engage, providing two-way communication. Even if using a chat, one can answer questions or provide feedback to the audience.

This will help to separate one from AI.

I am a big fan of AI. Also, I feel a certain realism in the understanding of how it cannot be stopped. People will turn to the courts or other avenues to prevent the spread. It isn't going to work.

Adapting is key. The future is one where proving one to be human is essential. That means doing things that AI cannot, to provide evidence to audiences, especially online, that one is real.

Obviously, mega-celebrities aren't about to do this. Individuals of lesser stature, however, can engage in a manner that shows he or she to be human.

AI is definitely setting the standards for the future and this is actually something I am really happy with
