Sustainable leather
Leather production, a 7,000-year-old practice, involves chemically treating animal hides to create a strong material.
There are also faux leather fabrics or synthetic leather made from petroleum-based plastics like polyurethane (PU) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
Tina Funder, Alt. Leather’s founder saw a gap in the market for sustainable leather alternatives.
The company selects sustainable, abundant ingredients like cellulose, starches, recycled fibers, and plant resins to create their unique, eco-friendly leather material.
Moreover, these materials reduce the environmental impact associated with animal-based leather and synthetic alternatives.
As per the website, its production results in emissions that are roughly three times lower than those generated by animal leather and between 30 to 70 percent lower than those produced by PU/PVC synthetic leathers.
The start-up then joined CSIRO’s India-Australia RISE Accelerator program, gaining direct access to manufacturing systems in India.
Manufacturers in Noida and Chennai were able to successfully produce handbags and footwear using their material.
“The real-world production runs in India provided valuable insights into the operational challenges of mass manufacturing. It allowed us to fine-tune our approach at an industrial scale and further improve the efficiency of our processes,” Funder said.
Supported by CSIRO, Alt. Leather aims to further refine its material through formulation testing.
If mass-produced, the sustainable, circular leather substitute will be able to reduce the environmental footprint of traditional leather production.
At the time when the bomber went missing, it had servicemen onboarded from three countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, who went missing with the aircraft in December 1943.

The crew of Baltimore FW282 consisted of several members who played crucial roles during their mission.
The pilot was Flight Lieutenant William Alroy Hugh Horsley from the RAAF. The navigator was Flight Lieutenant Leslie Norman Row from the UK’s Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR).
Believing it to be an RAAF aircraft, AegeanTec contacted History and Heritage – Air Force (HUWC-AF), which assessed the discovery and positively confirmed the wreck as RAAF Baltimore FW282.
“This aircraft discovery is significant and offers the chance to provide closure to families. The efforts of groups such as AegeanTec are critical for us in accounting for those 3143 Australian aviators with no known grave from the Second World War and the Korean conflict,” said RAAF’s Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Stephen Chappell.
“I am pleased, alongside my colleagues from the RAF and RNZAF, to this week to be able to announce the find and for us to acknowledge, collectively, the bravery of this combined crew of aviators from our three nations.”
RNZAF Chief of Air Force, Air Vice-Marshal Darryn Webb, emphasized that New Zealand was very grateful to AegeanTec for the important discovery.
“I hope will bring some sense of closure for the families. The sacrifice of this brave crew has long been remembered, especially by their families, and we can now honour their final resting-place with the respect they deserve,” Air Vice-Marshal Webb said.
